Massimo is a member of the Scientific Committee of the<br />
Maruzza Lefebvre d’Ovidio Foundation (Rome) leading<br />
the development of a qualified programme of research<br />
and teaching in palliative care. From 2002 to <strong>2004</strong> he<br />
was Medical Director of the “G Ghirotti” Hospice of<br />
Genoa. In <strong>2007</strong>, he was appointed Visiting Professor in<br />
Palliative Care at the Department of Palliative Care,<br />
Policy and Rehabilitation, at King’s <strong>College</strong> <strong>London</strong>.<br />

Consultant in Palliative Care, Honorary Senior Lecturer<br />
in Palliative Medicine<br />
Polly is a consultant and lead clinician in Palliative<br />
Medicine at <strong>King's</strong> <strong>College</strong> Hospital NHS Trust and<br />
honorary senior lecturer in the Department of Palliative<br />
Care, Policy & Rehabilitation, <strong>King's</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>London</strong>.<br />
She qualified from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School,<br />
and trained in General Medicine, Medical Oncology and<br />
Palliative Medicine prior to taking up her consultant post<br />
in 1997. She has led the development of the clinical<br />
Palliative Care Team at King’s and is closely involved in<br />
the undergraduate curriculum at the King’s <strong>College</strong><br />
<strong>London</strong> School of Medicine, as Palliative Medicine<br />
teaching lead, deputy head of year 4 and year 4 OSCE<br />
coordinator. Jointly with Rachel Burman, Polly is<br />
programme director for the <strong>London</strong> and KSS Deanery<br />
Specialty Training Programme for Palliative Medicine.<br />
She has previously chaired the South East <strong>London</strong><br />
Palliative Care coordinating Group of the South East<br />
<strong>London</strong> Cancer Network and remains an active<br />
participant. Her research interests include palliative care<br />
for non-cancer patients.<br />
Dr Alison Evans PhD MSc<br />
Research Fellow<br />
Alison completed her first degree in Psychology at<br />
University <strong>College</strong> <strong>London</strong> (1983 - 1986). She taught<br />
English in Spain and Japan and worked as a university<br />
administrator before returning to study to complete the<br />
MSc in Social Research Methods at City University<br />
(2000 - 2001). She went on to pursue her interest in<br />
research methods over the course of her PhD at City<br />
University (2003 - 2006) where she undertook a methodological<br />
investigation into use of the Internet as a<br />
social research tool for collecting data on sexual<br />
behaviour among gay and bisexual men. The PhD was<br />
supervised by Professors Dick Wiggins and Jonathan<br />
Elford and funded by the Economic and Social Research<br />
Council. Following this, she took up a one-year postdoctoral<br />
research fellowship at City University which<br />
provided the opportunity to develop her methodological<br />
research and publish work from her PhD thesis. She<br />
joined the department in <strong>2007</strong> and is currently working<br />
with Professors Irene Higginson and Matthew Hotopf on<br />
the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines<br />
for the management of depression in palliative care.<br />
