Tariq Saleem BSc MSc<br />
Research Fellow<br />
Tariq has a degree in Psychology from the University of<br />
<strong>London</strong> and an MSc in Health Psychology. Currently he<br />
has a leading role as Research Fellow and centre<br />
coordinator for the King’s Centre in Palliative Care in<br />
Neurology. The centre’s mission is to improve the<br />
treatment, rehabilitation and care of people affected by<br />
long term and progressive neurological conditions<br />
through research and development. He has published in<br />
the following areas: stroke, multiple sclerosis,<br />
Parkinson’s disease, progressive neurological<br />
conditions, cancer screening, sickle cell & thalassaemia,<br />
health psychology, anxiety and worrying, culture and<br />
ethnicity, bilingual health advocacy and palliative care.<br />
He is currently conducting a three year longitudinal<br />
study funded by the Department of Health looking at the<br />
symptoms and care needs in advanced Parkinson’s<br />
disease, multiple symptoms atrophy and progressive<br />
supranuclear palsy.<br />
Lucy Selman BA MPhil Cert Pall Care<br />
Research Associate<br />
Lucy read Philosophy at Nottingham University, and<br />
received an MPhil in Philosophy from Birkbeck <strong>College</strong>,<br />
specialising in Philosophy of Science. In 2006 she<br />
completed the Certificate in Palliative Care at King’s.<br />
After working for Help the Hospices, she travelled in<br />
India, undertaking fieldwork for the International<br />
Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University.<br />
In June 2005 she joined the department to work on a<br />
project modelling a palliative care service for heart<br />
failure patients at St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.<br />
She is currently working for <strong>Cicely</strong> <strong>Saunders</strong> International<br />
on the ENCOMPASS project, validating a version<br />
of the Palliative Care Outcome Scale for use in the<br />
African context. ENCOMPASS is a collaboration<br />
between King’s and palliative care centres in South<br />
Africa and Uganda, with preliminary development and<br />
validation of the POS through the African Palliative Care<br />
Association. Her academic interests include qualitative<br />
research, palliative care in the developing world,<br />
psycho-spiritual interventions and complementary<br />
therapies. A qualified yoga teacher and Thai massage<br />
practitioner, in 2006 Lucy was awarded a Churchill<br />
Travelling Fellowship to conduct research in India into<br />
the use of yoga and meditation in end of life care.<br />
