Dr Wendy Magee PhD NMT ARCM<br />

Honorary Senior Research Fellow<br />

Wendy trained as a music therapist at the University of<br />

Melbourne, Australia, before coming to study and work in<br />

the UK in 1989. She is a specialist in neuropalliative<br />

rehabilitation having worked since 1990 as a clinician,<br />

researcher and manager at the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability<br />

in Putney. Her doctorate was awarded by the<br />

University of Sheffield for researching the experience of<br />

music therapy for people living with chronic and complex<br />

Multiple Sclerosis. She has completed research projects<br />

using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies<br />

examining the effects of music therapy in collaborative<br />

practice to address communication and well-being after<br />

stroke, and exploring of the use of electronic music<br />

technologies in music therapy practice. She currently<br />

holds a postdoctoral fellowship at the <strong>Institute</strong> of Neuropalliative<br />

Rehabilitation, Putney, <strong>London</strong>. She has<br />

published widely on Multiple Sclerosis, low awareness<br />

states, Huntington’s Disease and neuro-rehabilitation.<br />

Current research activity focuses on music therapy in the<br />

treatment of neurological disorders and the development<br />

and validation of evaluation tools with this population.<br />

Dr Farida Malik BSc(Hons), MBBS, MRCP, MSc<br />

<strong>Cicely</strong> <strong>Saunders</strong> International Research Training Fellow<br />

Farida studied medicine at UMDS, University of <strong>London</strong>,<br />

qualifying in 1996. Following this she trained in hospital<br />

general medicine before joining the South Thames<br />

Specialist Registrar Training Scheme in Palliative<br />

Medicine. She has previously undertaken an intercalated<br />

BSc in Psychology (University of <strong>London</strong>) and an MSc in<br />

Palliative Care at King’s <strong>College</strong> <strong>London</strong>. Farida joined<br />

the department in 2005. She is currently undertaking a<br />

PhD funded by the <strong>Cicely</strong> <strong>Saunders</strong> International<br />

Programme for Research into Breathlessness looking at<br />

the experience of caregivers of breathless patients with<br />

advanced disease. Farida’s research interests include<br />

breathlessness and sleep disturbance, steroids in brain<br />

tumours, symptom and quality of life assessment.<br />
