RSS breaks own rule, comes out in support of Gadkari (26)
NAGPUR: Far from denting Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari's image, the India Against
Corruption 'expose' on Wednesday may have done a world of good for him. This becomes clear as
immediately after Arvind Kejriwal and his associate Anjali Damania's much-awaited press conference, the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as well all senior leaders of the BJP rallied behind Gadkari. Nationallevel
leaders of the BJP, who till other day were reluctant to give him a foothold in New Delhi, came out in
Gadkari's support. The RSS, which is seen as Gadkari's springboard, also rallied behind him with full
vigour. "The charges levelled against Gadkari sounded vague. It was a clear case of some ill-informed
people trying to exploit the electronic media to the hilt for their vested political interests," said Bhaiyyaji
Joshi, the No 2 in RSS hierarchy. As a rule the RSS never reacts to day-to-day political developments.
Joshi's official response was not only rare but also confirmed that the RSS was firmly behind him. RSS
ideologue and senior functionary MG Vaidya also felt that the IAC 'expose' was a frivolous exercise and
there was nothing in it that would stick to Gadkari. "I feel that the IAC lost its credibility by coming out with
such weak and baseless allegations. They had created huge expectations from their earlier exposes on
Robert Vadra and Salman Khurshid. But this time it was a damp squib," said Vaidya. "If Ajit Pawar has
erred in using his discretionary powers and gave lease rights to organizations linked to Gadkari, it was the
minister's mistake. Gadkari can't be blamed for that," said Vaidya. He also felt that IAC 'expose' would not
come in way of Gadkari's aspirations to lead the BJP for a second consecutive term. Moreover, Vaidya
also felt that hurling charges of abetting farmer suicides would not affect Gadkari. "Not a single farmer
suicide for agrarian reasons has been reported from Nagpur district where Gadkari has his business
interests. And doing a legitimate business cannot seen as a negative act per se," added Vaidya. The
criticism of the IAC from the RSS also comes as a surprise as its chief Mohan Bhagwat has been on
record saying that it fully supporting the anti-corruption crusade launched by Anna Hazare and Arvind
Kejriwal. Joshi also saw no hurdles for the second term of Gadkari as the BJP head, but was quick to
add: "Any decision in extending the term was the party's prerogative and the RSS had nothing to say on
it." (Times of India 18/10/12)
Modi meets RSS chief Bhagwat, wants Joshi, Togadia, Keshubhai ‘reined in’ (26)
Nagpur/Surat: The RSS on Sunday advised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to take everyone along
and practise a politics of inclusion, sources said. Apparently upset over an influential group of RSS
workers, led by Sanjay Joshi and Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Pravin Togadia, Modi on Sunday
visited the RSS headquarters here to have a close-door meeting with RSS top brass. Modi, who airdashed
in the morning, was closeted with Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, Sarkaryawah Bhaiyyaji Joshi
and Sahsarkaryawah Suresh Soni for about three hours. Though Modi later told the media that he had
long wished to meet the RSS leaders and that the RSS HQ was a shraddhasthan (reverential place),
sources said, Modi had come to appeal the RSS to rein in Joshi, Togadia and Keshubhai Patel, who have
opened a front against him ahead of the Assembly polls. Asked if there was any discussion about the
Gujarat elections and other political issues, Modi told the media outside the Sangh building: “We don’t
discuss politics with RSS.” He brushed aside suggestions that the issue of projecting him as prime
ministerial candidate for 2014 general elections was discussed. “The RSS does not get involved in such
things,” he told reporters. Sources, however, said that Modi is concerned over the Joshi-Togadia-
Keshubhai axis working against him. The RSS leaders, it is gathered, advised Modi to learn to take
everyone along to avoid rift. The RSS is in a bind over how to tackle a “haughty” Modi since it considers
him as the most important Hindutva mascot, but is cut up with him for his political intolerance and
grandstanding. According to a senior RSS leader, “When it comes to the BJP’s roadmap to increase its
