VHP invites Sikhs, Buddhists for Mahakumbh (26)
Chandigarh: Showing a liberal face, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Thursday extended invitation to
Sikhs and Buddhists to take part in the Mahakumbh to be held in Allahabad early next year. The
Mahakumbh, held after 12 years at Allahabad, will start on January 14, next year and will conclude on
February 28. Talking to mediapersons, Ashok Singhal, president of VHP said that they have already met
Avtar Singh Makkar, president of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) few days ago, in
which they accepted our invitation and asked us to send it formally. “Though SGPC, SAD and other
organisations of Sikh community have already accepted our invitation, we came here to invite them
formally and personally,” said Singhal. He added that VHP is not inviting only Sikh community to take part
in the Mahakumbh. “I also met Dalai Lama a few days ago and he accepted our invitation and assured us
that around 500 lamas will attend the Mahakumbh. Singhal did not rule out that Ram temple at Ayodhya
could be an issue in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, Hardeep Singh, member of SGPC said
that instead of accepting the VHP invitation for Mahakumbh, Sikh bodies should have asked VHP in
which capacity they are inviting the Sikhs to take part and whether VHP considers Sikhs as part of Hindu
religion or a separate religion or community. "If VHP consider Sikhs as part of Hindu religion, then Sikhs
should not go there and attend that ceremony, however, if they consider Sikhs as different religion, then
Sikhs may accept the invitation”, said Singh. Congress leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder
Kaur Bhattal condemned the way VHP extended invitation for the Mahakumbh. Talking to The Pioneer,
she said, “We, strongly condemn the move of VHP in this regard. They are dividing the Sikh community
by inviting SAD or SGPC only. Akalis are not the only one, who represent Sikh community. There are a
number of political parties, NGOs and others who belong to sikh community but work in different
organisations. If they want to invite Sikh community, they should talk to everyone rather than asking Chief
Minister of Punjab." (Pioneer 15/11/12)
the Parikrama which started on Wednesday. The saints will stay there till Kartik Purnima on November
for it,” said Triloki Nath Pandey, a VHP leader. Pandey said that VHP will be organising a grand
sammelan of saints during the Kumbh in Allahabad on February 7 where the issue of Ram Temple will be
