TEACHING EARTH SCIENCES ● Volume 31 ● Number 4, 2006 Primary teachers covering a range of topics including: Ancient Climates, Global Warming, the Jurassic Coast, the Mendips, Building Stones, ESEU, Fieldwork discussions, the International Baccalaureate and UKRIGS On-Line projects, whilst the afternoon allowed an introduction to the various fieldtrips that took place on Sunday. More on these will follow in future editions. Martin conducted the AGM with his usual efficiency before stepping down as Chairman. Martin has put in an incredible amount of effort in over the past six years, not only as a hardworking Chairman (2004- 2006) but also as President (2001-2003), and ESTA indebted to him for establishing a number of important contacts and valuable sponsorships, and ensuring that the Association remains healthy and prosperous. Thanks Martin. Council reports from the AGM 2006 can now be found on the ESTA website. As well as myself, other elections to Council were made at the AGM, including the re-appointment of both Maggie Williams as Treasurer and Susan Beale as Secretary, both for another 3 years in office. Thank you Maggie and Susan, your hard work is much appreciated. Thanks are also extended to Cally for agreeing to continue as Editor for this issue as she shows the “new editor” the ropes. In the meantime keep the contributions coming! The website is to be taken over by Peter Williams. David Whiteley, who has worked efficiently managing the website, and with Ben Church on the development of GEOTREX, is helping to ensure a smooth transition. Thank you David for helping to set up this excellent resource – how did we manage before this evolutionary event? As far as you the member is concerned, everything will be “business as normal” during this transition period. Advertising has been taken over by Jane Ladson whose contact details can be found in the front of the magazine. Do remember to pass on any details of anyone you think may want to advertise through us via Teaching Earth Sciences or the website. Professor Jon Blundy’s talk on “Forecasting Volcanic Eruptions” concluded an excellent series of lectures and workshops and certainly provoked many questions which were still being discussed at the Conference Dinner and bar later in the evening. The Sunday morning fieldtrips included subterranean geology in Burrington Combe, local building stones in Bristol, Red Beds in Portishead and limestones in Vallis Vale. Thanks are extended to all fieldtrip leaders for increasing our knowledge of the geology of the Bristol area and helping us to consider possible student/pupil fieldwork activities. I certainly returned home full of enthusiasm and drive, armed with a number of key ideas to put into practice over the coming months. As usual the ESTA Conference proved to be an incredibly important INSET opportunity. If you missed this year, then make sure you check out the website, this issue and future editions of TES to capture the main essence of the weekend. Finally in my capacity as new Chair, may I take this opportunity to thank those of you who have renewed your ESTA subscriptions (hopefully with a Gift Aid) and to extend a particularly warm welcome to new members. Make a note in your diary now for the next Conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland, 14-16th September 2007 with guaranteed awesome geological fieldwork.
