Social Studies<br />

Four units of credit shall be required in Social Studies. One unit of credit shall be required in<br />

American Government/Civics, World History, United States History, and Economics.<br />

CTAE and/or Modern Language and/or Fine Arts<br />

A total of three units of credit shall be required from the following areas: CTAE and/or Modern<br />

Language/Latin and/or Fine Arts. Students are encouraged to select courses in a focused area of<br />

interest. All students are encouraged to earn two units of credit in the same modern<br />

language/Latin. Students planning to enter or transfer into a University System of Georgia<br />

institution or other post-secondary institution must take two units of the same modern<br />

language/Latin . Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE) institutions<br />

(Technical College System of Georgia) do not require modern language/Latin for admissions.<br />

Students whose native language is not English may be considered to have met the foreign<br />

language expectation by exercising the credit in lieu of enrollment option if they are proficient in<br />

their native language. A formal exam is not necessary if evidence of proficiency is available.<br />

Students may earn three units of credit in a coherent sequence of CTAE courses through a selfselected<br />

pathway leading to college readiness and a career readiness certificate endorsed by<br />

related industries. All students are strongly encouraged to complete a career pathway while in<br />

high school. A chart with CTAE pathways offered at OCHS can be found following the course<br />

descriptions chart.<br />

Academic Electives/Other Electives<br />

A total of three academic electives are required for students to graduate. <strong>Course</strong>s that meet this<br />

requirement are noted in the course descriptions/listing. Five other electives are required in<br />

addition to three academic electives. Any courses not used to meet requirements in other areas<br />

may be used to satisfy this requirement.<br />

Health/Personal Fitness<br />

All students are required to complete one unit of credit in health (1/2 unit) and physical<br />

education (1/2 unit) for graduation.<br />

Diploma Seals<br />

Students may earn the following seals on their diploma upon graduation:<br />

• Advanced Placement Seal: Completion of three Advanced Placement courses<br />

• CTAE Seal: Completion of three CTAE courses in the same program area<br />

• Fine Arts Seal: Completion of three Fine Arts courses in the same area<br />

• Modern Language/Latin Seal: Completion of three Modern Language/Latin courses in the same<br />

area<br />
