Two South Africans Fined
For Showing Poiiier Film
JOHANNESBURG. SOUTH AFRICA
—Two Johannesburg men were fined for
exhibiting the Oscar-winning "Guess Who's
Coming to Diner," which is banned in
South Africa. Starring Sidney Poitier and
the late Spencer Tracy, the movie was banned
here because the censorship board said
it fell into the category "of depicting in an
offensive manner the intermingling of
European and non-European people."
If no admission charges are levied, banned
films of a "nonpornographic" nature
can be shown privately, however.
Ralph Phillips, 26, and Frank Margo,
25, pleaded guilty to charging two detectives
$1.44 admission to a private showing
of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" in
February. Both were fined $430, of which
$215 was suspended.
Pa. Senator Would Ban
X Movies at Drive-Ins
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA.—A state senator
has announced that he has launched a
second attack on X-rated films on drivein
screens. Sen. Richard A. Tilghman
(R-17th Dist.) said he has prepared legislation
which would ban outdoor showings
of films of the "adults only" variety.
Senator Tilghman pointed out that he is
concerned about possible traffic hazards
created when the screens are visible from
the roads. He also noted that young people
can view these films at drive-ins, even
though they are prohibited from seeing
them indoors.
"I know of one case where young people
use a church parking lot to watch these
movies," Tilghman said. He was referring
to a church on Allendale Road, where the
parking lot overlooks the Valley Forge
Drive-in.
Senator Tilghman and Rep. Anthony J.
Scirica (
R- 148th Dist.) a few weeks ago
sponsored legislation in the Senate and the
House which would force open-air theatre
operators to shield their screens from public
view. The action was taken at the urging
of the Upper Merion Township Board
of Supervisors and residents.
