LOS ANGELES—'-Summer of '42," the
with 450, dropped to 310 at the Plaza,
"Beyond All Limits" displayed the most
boxoffice strength among new features,
Classic Films Now Shown
In Former 'Adult' House
ALBUQUERQUE—A 25-year-old University
of New Mexico graduate is trying
something in this city that the critics of
the "new screen freedom" have been crying
for—and he's meeting with a fair
amount of success. He is Bert Manzari and
he has leased a one-time adult theatre and
turned it into a showcase for old-time
movies from Hollywood's "golden era."
On tap at the 153-seat theatre are screen
classics by the Marx Brothers, Greta Garbo
and Clark Gable.
"It just seemed to me that there are too
many pornography theatres, so I thought I
would try this approach." says Manzari,
who graduated with a major in psychology
from the University of New Mexico here
last summer and shortly after went to work
as manager of the Guild Art Theatre.
The Guild is the oldest adult-type theatre
in this town, having been started here in
1966 by Tom Coleman and Don Dunham.
It was a pioneer in showing exploitation
pictures in this city of 300,000 and in the
past year has seen at least nine imitators
open.
"Public reaction has been tremendous,"
says Manzari, who opened with the new
policy April 9 with a double bill of Buck
Rogers and Flash Gordon and in the interim
has shown Garbo's "Anna Karenina";
"A Night at the Opera," with the Marx
Brothers; Garbo's "Ninotchka"; the Marx
Brothers' "A Day at the Races"; Gable and
Laughton in "Mutiny on the Bounty," and
the Harlow-Gable picture, "Wife vs. Secretary."
Weekend business has been what Manzari
calls "adequate" but weekdays are
slow, he says, in describing his business to
date. "It will be interesting to see if people
really will put their money where their
mouths are and come to see good older
films," he adds.
Manzari said his biggest problem is finding
product. He noted that there are plenty
of the older films available but he has difficulty
locating who has the rights for
theatrical showing.
"I know they are available for home
showing but it has been almost impossible
to locate who owns the exhibition rights
for theatres," he says.
Manzari said he called Boxoffice Western
editor Syd Cassyd when he first started
and got some leads on starting in the business.
Now, he needs to locate more distributors
with this sort of product.
Born in Montana, Manzari has lived in
Albuquerque for the past 15 years, is single
and lives alone. Humphrey Bogart is his
personal favorite and he adds that he's
"always been a movie fan." He's the first
one in his family to get into the movie
business. But, on the future of his unique
enterprise, which is being heralded by the
Establishment but not enthusiastically supported
at the boxoffice, he adds that he
has "no idea what's going to happen."
