LETTERS
Commends BOXOFFICE Editorial
To Ben Shlyen:
In the May 10. 1971, edition of Boxoffice,
I noted your editorial titled, "Food for
Thought." Other articles and editorials have
also touched on the same small-town exhibition
problems when trying to buy film.
I have a small 300-seat house in a farming
community, where years ago a $12.50
Gene Autry or Roy Rogers from Republic
paid lots of our bills. But, today, after 30
years in
the business, things are very different.
Your reference to such pictures as Airport"
and "Love Story" hit the nail on the
head. 1 buy and book out of Philadelphia. I
finally solved the problem about "Patton,"
"M*A*S*H" and "Hello, Dolly!"
Universal tells me the "company policy"
is at least one week now for "Airport."
Paramount advises they must have four
weeks yet for "Love Story."
We are only open in the winter months
four days—summer months we can go to
five and sometimes six days—all of which
means that "Airport" and "Love Story" will
be dead ducks by the time they are released
to me.
I am trying to keep the only theatre left
in our county (Susquehanna) open.
Those New York policy-makers would do
make the rounds to houses like
well to
mine—they might change their minds—
maybe.
Thanks for calling these matters to the
attention of all segments of the industry. If
the right changes are made, it will be
thanks to you. Keep up the good work.
My nearest competition is 25 miles away
in Binghamton, N.Y. Years ago, I had a
first-run status. In those days, they seemed
glad to get Montrose out of the way as
early as possible, instead of letting the
prints lay idle for several weeks.
You have the facility, Boxoffice, to keep
hitting those policy-makers hard. Keep up
the good work.
NEW YORK—Allied Artists" satire on
pornographic movies, "Portraits of Women,"
Fine Arts Theatre in San Diego and its
second week at the Rivoli Theatre, Hartford,
Conn. It just completed a highly successful
engagement at Chicago's Cinestage
Theatre.
May openings for "Portraits of Women"
include the Loft Theatre in Tucson, the
Valley Art Theatre in Temple, Ariz., the
Town Theatre in Bloomington, Indiana and
21 other theatres throughout the country.
