A bizarre drama of the occult. "Simon.
King of the Witches" had its world premiere
Wednesday (19) at the Pix Theatre,
Hollywood, and at selected theatres throughout
Los Angeles and Orange counties, it
was announced by Joe Solomon, president
of Fanfare Corp.

Pacific Theatres' New View Theatre for
some tune now, formerly was with the Tiffany
Theatres for three years.

LONG BEACH. CALIF.—The Paramount
Drive-in, following a three-year remodeling
program, has opened as a twinscreen
operation. Cinema 1 will continue
showing only G and GP-rated films, while
Cinema 2 will show all films except those
rated X.
This same drive-in theatre is the location
for the Paramount "Swap Meet." The company
now conducts five such marketing
operations throughout the state of California.
'Virgin Runaway' Viewed
By Phoenix, Ariz., Judge
PHOENIX—A movie from the
Empress
Theatre, 2339 East McDowell, was viewed
Thursday (6) by Superior Court Judge
Roger Strand. No ruling on whether the
film is "obscene" was made, pending further
testimony. "The Virgin Runaway," a
16mm sound and color movie, was brought
into the court under subpoena by the city
of Phoenix.
The city is conducting a prior adversary
hearing, as required by the U. S. Supreme
Court, before any action is taken to seize
the film.
Attorney Anthony Raineri. acting for the
Empress Theatre and its operator Danny
Tafoya, requested that the showing be deferred
on grounds that his services had been
engaged Monday (3) anl he had not had
sufficient time to familiarize himself with
the case. Raineri also contended that a
restraining order issued by Judge Strand to
keep the film in Phoenix was unconstitutional
and said state law does not specifically
bar allegedly obscene motion pictures.
Judge Strand denied the motions but said
Raineri and Asst. City Atty. Alan Max
could file written arguments.
Judge Strand closed the courtroom to
all except his court personnel, lawyers involved
in the hearing, witnesses and newsmen,
saying he wanted to keep out children
and idly curious during the showing. Allegedly,
the hour-long film portrayed the
adventures of a 13-year-old girl who left
home after an argument, engaged in explicit
sex acts with five women and men.

After the screening. Judge Strand set a
continuation of the hearing for 9:30 a.m.
Tuesday (18), at which time the city planned
to present testimony from Dr. Dean
Mitchell. Phoenix consulting psychologist,
who has been used as an expert in prior
obscenity hearings.

before the state legislature. The proposed
