Tent 20 ladies held a gigantic rummage
sale in Memphis May 14-22. hours
10 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily. Tent 20 barkers
assisted in the sale and Film Transit picked
up and delivered large items, such as appliances.
Money made from the sale will
go to the tent's charities.
Bill Kendall, manager of the Guild and
Studio theatres, defended both of these
houses in a newspaper article after a writer
had mentioned them in a story centered on
skin flicks. Kendall pointed out that the
Studio was in its 26th week with "The
Stewardesses." which had been seen by
more than 40.000 Memphians at that time

were cited by Kendall as other recent
Studio offerings. He pointed out that the
Guild was the first Memphis theatre to
show foreign films and he named several
Academy Award winners which had been
shown on the Guild screen.
Lamar Parker, better known here in her
hometown as Lamar Rickey, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Albert C. Rickey, was announced
as a co-star in the upcoming MGM
film, "Curse of Dark Shadows."

father in the Ernest Lehman film of "Portnoy's

Memphis Film Board
Asks More Authority
MEMPHIS—The Memphis Board of Review
went before the city council last week
asking for more authority. The board also
requested that theatres be required to screen

their films before the board prior to offering
the features to the public.
The council took the request under advisement
after Lewis Polk, board chairman,
declared that the volunteer system of
exhibitors bringing questionable films before
the board for an evaluation "isn't
working."
The board voted to ban showing in
Memphis of "Zachariah" to under 18-yearolds.
Polk said the board objected to a
scene showing a woman, nude from the
waist up, dancing in a cage outside a
brothel.
Also requested by the board was expansion
of its membership from 12 to 16
and "more vigorous prosecution of pornography
cases."
'Ryan's' Lofty 500
In Carnival Week
MEMPHIS—Cotton Carnival Week —
with street parades, dancing in the streets,
sidewalk cafes and a downtown carnival —
has come and gone; as always, this spring
week of merrymaking cut down on firstrun
theatre attendance and grosses.
In spite of the carnival, a second week
of "Ryan's Daughter" grossed 500 per cent
at the Park and the fifth week of "Wuthering
Heights" at the Village earned an impressive~300.
However, both of these theatres
are out of the downtown area, so they
were not in direct competition with the
. .
carnival.

NEW ORLEANS—Two holdovers
took
over the top rankings, based on gross percentages
at first-run theatres — "Relations,"
second week at Cine Royale, and "Ryan's
Daughter." fourth week. Trans-Lux Cinerama,
each registering 250. "How to Frame
a Figg" opened at the Joy Theatre at 150,
good enough to tie "Little Murders," playing
a fourth week at the Robert E. Lee Theatre.
