Institute of Housing & Mobility Challenges facing the EDS industry in Canada's urban centres Overlaying parking tickets with delivery data The project team obtained parking ticket data from the City of Toronto to determine the high concentration zones for parking tickets in Toronto during 2008. We obtained data for all addresses or locations where the ticketing authorities issued in excess of 1,000 tickets. The parking ticket data were geo-coded before being analyzed using GIS. Figure 33 presents the spatial distribution of the parking tickets, overlaid with the spatial distribution of the courier deliveries in the downtown area for December 2007. The pink dots are scaled to represent the number of parking tickets issued. It could be seen from Figure 33 that there is a strong overlap between the high volume of deliveries and multiple locations where more than 1,000 parking tickets were issued in the area bounded by Bay Street to the east, York Street to the West, Front Street to the south and Queen Street to the north. It appears that the delivery activity usually picks up over the course of a week where Monday represents lower volume than other days of the Page 52

Despite the rising trend, Table 13 suggests that the daily distribution is roughly 20% of the week’s deliveries. The project team also analyzed the number of packages per delivery and determined the averages across the four study months. Table 14 suggests that the primary delivery activity involves a single package, with only one in five deliveries involving more than one package. Table 14 reveals little difference in the composition of deliveries over the four month period. Approximately 80% of all the deliveries contained a single package whereas 14% of deliveries contained two to four packages. A small minority of 7% of the deliveries contained five of more packages.
