12.2.3 Evaluation, Feedback and Next steps<br />
The concept samples were evaluated by a commercial company. The panels<br />
were manufactured using Light Resin Transfer Moulding (LRTM), a<br />
technique currently experiencing rapid increases in popularity in the<br />
composite market. Figure 24 demonstrates the principle behind the<br />
manufacture.<br />

During processing the reinforcement layer is laid up on a release coated<br />
female mould that has been coated in a thin layer <strong>of</strong> gel coat. The male side<br />
<strong>of</strong> the mould is secured around the outside <strong>of</strong> the reinforcement layer. Inlet<br />
and outlet points are secured through the mould so that air can be removed<br />
through the use <strong>of</strong> a vacuum pump and replaced with resin. Pressure is<br />
applied to the laminate once laid‐up in order to improve its consolidation,<br />
the air in the mould is then extracted by the vacuum pump and thus up to<br />
