12.6 Automotive Flooring Systems<br />
12.6.1 Overview<br />
As described in Section 12.5, the automotive market is a large global<br />
industry. Table 25 displays that 4.5kg <strong>of</strong> textile on average is used per car<br />
in the manufacture <strong>of</strong> the flooring system. Within the last few years there<br />
has been an amount <strong>of</strong> consolidation in the automotive industry, with the<br />
trend towards fewer, larger suppliers.<br />
Automotive flooring systems are essentially passive and have the primary<br />
objective <strong>of</strong> providing sound absorption properties as well as comfort and<br />
aesthetics. Figure 28 shows the area <strong>of</strong> the car that incorporates the flooring<br />
system.<br />

The systems are comprised <strong>of</strong> a composite construction including a needlepunched<br />
nonwoven or tufted face layer, a stiffening layer and an insulation<br />
layer. A typical construction can be seen in Figure 29.<br />
