Kevin Adler, kadler2@earthlink.net In the Limelight Owen Murray told the Wall Street Journal on Aug. 24 that he uses Marketfield Asset Management’s Marketfield Fund, a long-short equity mutual fund, to complement broad market funds. In a response to an inquiry on the CNNMoney “Help Desk” feature, Brian Pon wrote that a retiree might have to deviate from the commonly held belief that a 4-percent annual withdrawal rate is always sustainable. After a period of poor returns, a retiree should consider reducing withdrawals to protect a nest egg, wrote Pon. A column by Jason Gittins was published in the North Bay (California) Business Journal on Sept. 17. Gittins wrote about how to select a financial advisor, focusing on method of compensation, fiduciary obligation, services provided, and advice provided for clients during the 2008-’09 economic downturn. The Small Business Administration is crediting Mary Baldwin for helping an entrepreneur in Melbourne, FL, turn around her business after experiencing a credit crunch in 2009. Baldwin is a board member of the Women’s Business Center at Florida Tech, which helped Melbourne Dancewear find a cheaper retail location and create a new loyalty discount program, among numerous innovations. InvestmentNews spoke with Lauren Locker during the week she assumed the chairmanship of NAPFA. Locker said that she envisions a collaborative process on key issues, such as the fight over a self-regulatory organization for financial advisors. NAPFA corporate member Modera Wealth Management LLC has been named as one of Inc. magazine’s 500/5000 list of America’s fastest growing companies. Modera employs 31 staff members, including 17 with CFP ® certification and three Chartered Financial Analysts. After NAPFA’s West Conference, Brent Hunsberger of the Oregonian newspaper summarized key points about the financial challenge of living in retirement for several decades. He quoted Rick Miller about the importance of Social Security and Cheryl Krueger on how to estimate a client’s expected lifespan. In August, Cathy Curtis merged her firm, Curtis Financial Planning, with ClearRock Capital. ClearRock has offices in Sun Valley and Boise, ID and Palo Alto, CA. Curtis’s former office in Oakland will become a new ClearRock office. Bernie Kiely looked at the 2011 federal tax return for Mitt Romney and told AdvisorOne.com that Romney could have reduced his taxes with some basic strategies. For example, Romney could have utilized municipal bonds to produce tax-exempt interest rather than accruing more than $3 million of taxable interest last year. Henry Bragg said that accountants work at a faster pace because of tax deadlines, but advisors must spend more time on communications because they work with clients on a wider range of issues. Ann Gugle agreed that having people skills are the critical factor. Ken Weingarten said that his wife Trina, who is a CPA, decided against adding a CFP ® certification.
