in a social system that had traditionally been rooted in the hierarchical
family stracture. The extended family is still an element of Japanese
life, but the enormous economic growth and urbanisation of the past
20 years have generated still other forces of change. How have the
Japanese responded to these forces? What role does the family play in
the life of the individual in present-day Japan? This videogram
explores these questions as it forcuses on four generations of the
Hanawa Family, in the suburbs of Tokyo, their beliefs, their ways of
working and living with each other, and their hopes for the future.
