Summary: A father wishes his daughter to marry; she would prefer to
stay with him in this moving late Ozu film, which was one of his
personal favourites. From a close reading of this and other Ozu films,
both David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson have persuasively argued
that Ozu's style is neither symbolic nor peculiarly 'Japanese' but is
singular in its artistically motivated, nuanced precision and
unpredictability. They also argue that while firmly centred on the
'home' film, Ozu's ideological concerns, in Late Spring far from being
conservative and nostalgic for the patriarchal family are liberal in the
context of postwar Japanese culture.
