Summary: Shiko Munakata (1903-1975) was the greatest woodcut<br />
artist <strong>of</strong> modern <strong>Japan</strong>. Blind in one eye, he won recognition worldwide<br />
for the range and vitality, the pr<strong>of</strong>ound religious sensibility, <strong>of</strong> his<br />
work. Film was made in the last years <strong>of</strong> his life, presenting not only<br />
his work but a unique portrait <strong>of</strong> the artist himself, his energy and<br />
humor, his faith, the intimate relation between his art and his<br />
birthplace in Northern <strong>Japan</strong>. Shown in detail are: "<strong>Japan</strong> so ancient<br />
and beautiful", "<strong>The</strong> ten disciples <strong>of</strong> Buddha" and "Women tranported<br />
by joy" (Grand Prix, São Paulo Biennial, 1955), "Chronicles <strong>of</strong> the<br />
miseries <strong>of</strong> Tohoku". Final scene shows Munakata returning to Aomori<br />
for the annual Nebuta festival, the color and energy <strong>of</strong> which had<br />
