English
Publisher: North Sydney : The Japan foundation, Japan Cultural Centre
2001
Physical description: 112 min Video Recording
System requirements: VHS [PAL]
Summary: "Thoes of you who had spent time with Japanese People
would have realized thet humore is an important part of their lives.
Thet too have their own form than stand-up comedy, though the
performaers sit-down rather than stand-up! This traditional performing
art, the origines of which can be traced back some 400 years is called
Rakugo. In Rakugo, the performer can be a narrator (as is commen in
Western style comedy), but usually he becomes the actual characters
in the story. These characters converse without a narrator coming
between them. The change for the performaer is switching from are
distinct character to another. Each character represent exaggerated
aspects of the human personality which we can call readily related to.
The predicaments which they find themselves in are part of everyday
life. Until recently, the rich art of Rakugo has not been accessible to
non-Japanese speakers. Now, young energetic performers keen for the
Internaionalization of Rakugo are presenting their shows in English.
Afterall, Rakugo deal with human nature and universal themes which
people can respond to no matter which country they are now". --
