Summary: Young Japanese have grown up in a period of peace and
prosperity, and their lifestyle seems very Western. Yet there are some
deep undercurrents in their lives that make them different in some
ways from Western people. The starting point for understanding
Japanese youth is the intensely competitive Japanese education
system. The most prestigious jobs are reserved for the graduates of a
few top universities; thus, during school years pressure is high, and
failure can lead to severe depression or even suicide. After this
traumatic period, most young Japanese settle into rather conventional
lifestyles, accepting their lot with patience and resignation. However,
there are a growing number who, for various reasons, take a more
challenging attitude towards the future. This film introduces some of
these people and their achievements. The English narration is
supplemented with extensive interviews which give provocative and
sometimes humorous insights into the thinking of the young Japanese.
What they say gives an important clue to the way Japan as a nation
may change in the next few decades.
