Elementary <strong>School</strong><br />
The Elementary <strong>School</strong> serves students from kindergarten to 5 th grade. The classroom teacher is responsible<br />
<strong>for</strong> most student instruction, supplemented by specialists in Art, Library, Drama, Computer Literacy, Physical<br />
Education, Literacy and Communication.<br />
Middle <strong>School</strong><br />
The Middle <strong>School</strong> serves students from grades 6 to 8 and is designed <strong>for</strong> students in transition from childhood<br />
to adolescence. The curriculum includes emphasis on basic skills in Language Arts, Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, Social<br />
Studies, and Science.<br />
High <strong>School</strong><br />
The High <strong>School</strong> serves students from grades 9 to 12. Students in this program meet <strong>the</strong> graduation<br />
requirements from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> State Department of Education.<br />
The mission of <strong>the</strong> high school is to challenge and help students grow intellectually, personally, and socially.<br />
Graduates should be able and willing to take <strong>the</strong> appropriate first steps into <strong>the</strong>ir chosen field of work or study,<br />
to act responsibly as citizens, and to enjoy a productive life.<br />
High <strong>School</strong> Special Needs<br />
The Special Needs program serves students who have additional disabilities, which adversely affect <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
educational per<strong>for</strong>mance. The staff members in this program work as a team with additional staff assisting with<br />
activities such as daily instruction, CTE and PE classes, transportation to work sites, job coaching, and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
places.<br />
Pilot Program <strong>for</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> Students with Emotional Disabilities<br />
The PPDSED is a day program that provides educational, behavioral and counseling services to deaf students<br />
from 9 th to 12 th grade. The program provides a more structured academic setting and more intensive support<br />
than what is provided in a typical high school.<br />
The academic program follows <strong>the</strong> curriculum offered throughout <strong>the</strong> state of <strong>Maryland</strong>. Students in <strong>the</strong><br />
program take required courses and high school assessments to earn an MSDE diploma.<br />
A structured behavior management system provides feedback to students throughout <strong>the</strong> day. Students earn<br />
points <strong>for</strong> expected behaviors and move through a leveling system where <strong>the</strong> goal is to be fully mainstreamed<br />
into <strong>the</strong> regular program.<br />
Physical Education<br />
The Physical Education program serves all academic departments. The department provides adaptative P.E.<br />
classes <strong>for</strong> students with physical disabilities and also includes teaching of health in middle school and high<br />
school.<br />
Career and Technology Education<br />
Career and Technology Education serves students with an array of fine arts, technical, and career pathway<br />
courses to enrich students’ learning and prepare <strong>the</strong>m <strong>for</strong> future employment.<br />
Classroom Testing<br />
~TESTING PROGRAMS~<br />
MSD uses a variety of assessment tools to determine student achievement. Students in kindergarten are<br />
assessed using <strong>the</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> Model <strong>for</strong> <strong>School</strong> Readiness (MMSR) checklist. Students in pre-kindergarten<br />
through 1 st grade are assessed using <strong>the</strong> Work Sampling System. In elementary, middle and high school,<br />
teachers administer tests and quizzes depending on <strong>the</strong> common core objectives. High school students take<br />
final examinations. Additional in<strong>for</strong>mation concerning testing is available under each department’s Grading<br />
Policy and from <strong>the</strong> Assistant Principals.<br />
