Nutrition/Wellness Policy<br />

The <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> Board of Trustees and Administration is aware that childhood obesity has<br />

reached epidemic levels throughout <strong>the</strong> country. Overweight children are at higher risk <strong>for</strong> developing severe<br />

long-term health problems, and overweight children can be affected by discrimination, psychological stress, and<br />

low self-esteem. It also recognizes that students need adequate, nourishing food in order to grow, learn and<br />

maintain good health. It fur<strong>the</strong>r recognizes that significant research indicates a positive relationship between<br />

adequate nutrition and learning resulting in academic success. For <strong>the</strong>se reasons, <strong>the</strong> Superintendent or <strong>the</strong><br />

designee will ensure that all foods available to students during school hours shall be:<br />

� Selected so as to contribute to <strong>the</strong> student’s nutritional well-being and <strong>the</strong> prevention of disease;<br />

� Prepared in ways that will appeal to students, retain nutritive quality and foster lifelong healthful eating<br />

habits;<br />

� Provided to give a variety of healthful choices at all times.<br />

All employees of <strong>the</strong> school will support <strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong> Nutrition Policy and parents/guardians will be<br />

encouraged to support <strong>the</strong> school’s nutrition policy ef<strong>for</strong>ts. Healthy food choices (fresh fruits and vegetables,<br />

whole grains, dairy products) will be promoted in school activities involving staff, students and community.<br />

The Superintendent shall ensure that food sales by school-related groups and <strong>the</strong> use of vending machines are<br />

in compliance with state and federal law. Food sold to students on school premises during school hours,<br />

through vending machines and by student sales will meet or exceed nutritional standards. The sale of all foods<br />

of minimal nutritional value (FMNV) is prohibited from 12:01 a.m. until <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> standard school day.<br />

Parental Media Consent<br />

Parents will be asked to complete a media permission <strong>for</strong>m upon <strong>the</strong>ir child’s admission to MSD, allowing<br />

pictures or videotape footage of <strong>the</strong>ir child <strong>for</strong> diverse MSD publications or MSD relevant webpage footage.<br />

This <strong>for</strong>m will last <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> duration of <strong>the</strong> student’s enrollment. Thereafter, any changes to <strong>the</strong> permission <strong>for</strong>m<br />

should be directed to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Campus</strong> Principal.<br />

Pets<br />

Students are not permitted to keep pets of any kind in <strong>the</strong>ir rooms or anywhere on campus with <strong>the</strong> exception of<br />

Hearing Ear Dogs as approved by <strong>the</strong> Director of Student Affairs.<br />

Phone Calls or Pager Messages During <strong>School</strong> Hours<br />

Elementary and middle school students are not permitted to carry a pager or phone with <strong>the</strong>m during school<br />

hours. High school students may carry <strong>the</strong>m but are not permitted to send any text messages, make any<br />

phone calls, or access <strong>the</strong> internet during class time; however teachers may permit usage during class time <strong>for</strong><br />

instructional purposes. Personal communication devices are not to be used on any of MSD’s networks. Any<br />

personal communication devices used inappropriately will be confiscated and <strong>the</strong> student subject to<br />

consequences. MSD is not responsible <strong>for</strong> any lost, stolen, or damaged personal communication devices.<br />

Students are encouraged to label <strong>the</strong> device and to record <strong>the</strong> device’s serial number. An Assistant Principal<br />

can authorize <strong>the</strong> use of personal communication devices when deemed appropriate.<br />

Rating <strong>for</strong> Movies/TV Programs and Video Games<br />

The following rating policy is <strong>for</strong> all employees/students whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> movie is being shown <strong>for</strong> recreational<br />

purposes in <strong>the</strong> Student Life program or educational purposes during classroom time:<br />

� Movies rated "G" or "PG" may be shown to all audiences without parental permission.<br />

� Movies rated "PG-13" must have prior parental written consent to be shown if <strong>the</strong> student is under <strong>the</strong> age<br />

of 13.<br />

� Movies rated “R” may be shown on campus to students 17 years of age and over with prior parental<br />

written consent and prior approval by <strong>the</strong> Principal or his/her designee.<br />
