A. Most of the things you buy or use are made of materials that come
from natural resources.
1. Natural resources are things found in nature that living things use.
2. Organisms use natural resources to meet their needs.
3. Natl resources include
a. nutrients,which come from vegetables,
b. trees,which provide lumber, and
c. minerals,which can be used to make plastic and metal.
B. Natural resources are used to make items,such as a CD player.
1. The cardboard box the CD player comes in is made from trees.
2. Plastic is made from crude oil,athick, dark liquid found underground.
3. The metal screws are made from iron ore,which is also found underground.
4. It takes energy to get natural resources and make them into the parts of a CD
player.
a. Energy also comes from natural resources.
b. Trucks use gasoline or diesel fuel to take natural resources to factories.
c. The electricity used to power the machines that make the CD player comes
from coal.
C. Resources that can be replaced in 100 years or less are called renewable
resources.
1. Energy from the Sun is a renewable resource because it gives off light energy
every day and
will continue to do so for millions of years.
2. Trees are a renewable resource because most trees will grow back and be cut
again in less than 100 years.
3. Water is a renewable resource because the same water has been reused over
and over again on Earth.
4. Wind is a renewable resource because it can be used again and again to make
electricity with the help of a wind mill.
