of the altar. Both Subops KU-1-A and -E were<br />

designed to locate the stela socket and gather<br />

chronological information; only the latter goal<br />

was accomplished.<br />

Stela Fragment 1 (Lot KU-1-A-2) was laying<br />

flat, oriented east-west in front of Structure<br />

3 (Table 5.3). Our guess is that Fragment 1<br />

is the bottom of the stela and the side to the<br />

west would have originally been placed in the<br />

ground or connected to a piece broken off in<br />

the ground. The top surface of Fragment 1 has<br />

faint traces of carvings; however, the condition<br />

of the carvings is so poor that we can only state<br />

that the monument was once carved. No details<br />

are discernible. Regardless, the presence of<br />

a carved stela is important since so few are<br />

known from the region. Once the fragment<br />

was removed from the unit, the flat surface<br />

facing the ground was inspected for indications<br />
