Register of Electors<br />

The Register of Electors was produced on the 1 st February<br />

and came into force on 15 th February 2012. The total<br />

electorate for <strong>County</strong> <strong>Offaly</strong> for the 2012/2013 Register of<br />

Electors was 56,713 broken down over the local electoral<br />

areas as follows:<br />

Birr 10,699<br />

Edenderry 15,570<br />

Ferbane 11,859<br />

Tullamore 18,585<br />

Total on the Register 56,713<br />

Civic Receptions<br />

Civic Welcome<br />

<strong>Offaly</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong> resolved at its meeting on 16 th May<br />

2011 to accord a Civic Welcome to President of the United<br />

States of America Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle<br />

Obama on the occasion of their visit to the President’s<br />

ancestral home of Moneygall, Co. <strong>Offaly</strong> on 23 rd May 2011.<br />

The <strong>Council</strong> also agreed to present gifts with <strong>Offaly</strong> themes<br />

to the President and Mrs. Obama to mark the occasion. A<br />

parchment scroll of Civic Welcome by well known Irish<br />

calligrapher, Tim O’Neill, in the lettering that emulates the<br />

Book of Durrow and the Book of Kells was signed by Cllr.<br />

Danny Owens, Cathaoirleach and Mr. Pat Gallagher,<br />

<strong>County</strong> Manager. The other gifts included: a model of the<br />

Durrow High Cross; a selection of books commissioned by<br />

<strong>Offaly</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, i.e., Stories from a Sacred<br />

Landscape – from Croghan Hill to Clonmacnoise, by<br />

Caimin O’Brien, Living under Thatch, by Barry O’Reilly<br />

and <strong>Offaly</strong> History & Society – Essays on the History of<br />

an Irish <strong>County</strong>, edited by William Nolan and Timothy P.<br />

O’Neill; a CD Black is the Earth composed by Adele<br />

O’Dwyer; Andromeda – a pendant specially<br />

commissioned by <strong>Offaly</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, designed by<br />

Rachel McKenna, Architect, <strong>Offaly</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong> and<br />

crafted by jeweler Cathal Barber in Birr. The Scroll of<br />

Civic Welcome and the presidential Gifts were conveyed<br />

to the President and his wife through the offices of the<br />

U.S. Embassy in Dublin.<br />
