• Floodplain and stream stabilization to reduce<br />

bank erosion and improve riparian and aquatic<br />

environments will help improve water quality.<br />

• Improved management measures at and near<br />

the Port of Harlingen designed to mitigate<br />

unauthorized releases of fertilizer and sugar<br />

into the tidally infl uenced portion of the Arroyo<br />

Colorado will reduce nutrient loading.<br />

Messages defi ning what individuals can do to help<br />

include the following:<br />

• Find out where you live in relation to the Arroyo<br />

Colorado.<br />

• Get to know the Arroyo Colorado, both near<br />

your home and in other areas of the <strong>Lower</strong> <strong>Rio</strong><br />

<strong>Grande</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>.<br />

• Ask your county and city elected offi cials to<br />

address pollution issues within your community.<br />

• Support local efforts to repair or replace outdated<br />

wastewater treatment facilities and infrastructure.<br />

• Support habitat conservation and restoration<br />

projects and preservation of open lands,<br />

farmland and green spaces.<br />

• Volunteer for environmental projects in your<br />

community, such as the Texas Watch program for<br />

monitoring water quality in the Arroyo, local trash<br />

cleanups and habitat restoration projects.<br />

• Participate in, or encourage storm drain<br />

stenciling in your community.<br />

• Adopt a zero tolerance attitude toward littering, a<br />

potential source of pollution.<br />

• Sign up to get news updates from the <strong>Watershed</strong><br />

Coordinator.<br />

• Become a part of the Arroyo Colorado <strong>Watershed</strong><br />

Partnership.<br />

The Arroyo Colorado<br />

Education & Outreach (ACW<br />

E&O) <strong>Plan</strong><br />

Based on independent research and the<br />

recommendations of consultants, the ACW<br />

Partnership’s E&O Work Group developed the following<br />
