Wetland<br />

Near-Term Goals for Wastewater<br />

Infrastructure (2006-2010)<br />

Eleven load reduction measures associated with<br />

institutional controls (i.e., new discharge permits or<br />

amendments of existing permits) are planned for 2006<br />

through 2010. These measures include construction<br />

of fi ve new wastewater treatment facilities—East <strong>Rio</strong><br />

Hondo Water Supply Corporation (ERHWSC) south<br />

of <strong>Rio</strong> Hondo, the City of San Benito, the City of La<br />

Feria, the City of Alamo and Military Highway Water<br />

Supply Corporation (MHWSC) in Progreso—and six<br />

expansions and/or upgrades of existing treatment<br />

facilities—City of <strong>Rio</strong> Hondo, City of Hidalgo, City of<br />

Pharr, City of Donna, City of Weslaco and Harlingen<br />

Water Works System’s (HWWS) #1 facility.<br />

Also within the planning period of 2006 through<br />

2010, 58,610 colonia residents living in the Arroyo<br />

Colorado <strong>Watershed</strong> will be connected to various<br />

municipal wastewater collection systems (approximately<br />

16,927 total connections) and eight enhanced<br />

wastewater treatment projects will be completed.<br />

These projects include:<br />

1) Construction of a 4-acre wetland and pond<br />

system and conversion of a 6.75-acre<br />

wastewater treatment lagoon into a wetland cell<br />

system for effl uent polishing for the City of La<br />

Feria,<br />
