The Western Health Board has developed a health promotion strategy (Western
Health Board 1999). Although this does not contain a specific aim for mental
health promotion, Goal 1 aims to affirm and support healthy lifestyle choices
(physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health). Evans & Jones (2001)
state that within the Western Health Board there is now an increasing
recognition among service providers that mental health can be actively promoted
in the same way as physical health. In order to address this issue, it has been
promotion. Mental health promotion initiatives have also been undertaken in the
North Eastern and Midland health board regions.
