Modern challenges in the design of large-scale<br />

building structures will be studied. Tall buildings,<br />

large convention centers, and major sports<br />

stadiums present major opportunities for creative<br />

solutions and leadership on the part of engineers.<br />

This course is designed to expose the students<br />

to this environment by having them undertake the<br />

complete design of a large structure from initial<br />

design concepts on through all the major design<br />

decisions. The students work as members of a<br />

design team to overcome the challenges inherent<br />

in major projects. Topics include overview of major<br />

projects, project criteria, and interface with architecture,<br />

design of foundations and structural systems,<br />

design challenges in the post 9/11 environment<br />

and roles, responsibilities, and legal issues.<br />

CIEN 4245x Tunnel design and construction<br />

Lect: 3. 3 pts. Professor Munfah.<br />

This course covers the engineering design and<br />

construction of different types of tunnel, including<br />

cut and cover tunnel, rock tunnel, soft ground<br />

tunnel, immersed tube tunnel, and jacked tunnel.<br />

The design for the liner, excavation, and instrumentation<br />

are also covered. A field trip will be<br />

arranged to visit the tunneling site.<br />

aspects of problems involving human interaction<br />

with the natural environment. Review of fundamental<br />

principles that underlie the discipline of<br />

environmental engineering, i.e., constituent transport<br />

and transformation processes in environmental<br />

media such as water, air, and ecosystems.<br />

Engineering applications for addressing environmental<br />

problems such as water quality and treatment,<br />

air pollutant emissions, and hazardous<br />

waste remediation. Presented in the context of<br />

current issues facing practicing engineers and<br />

government agencies, including legal and regulatory<br />

framework, environmental impact assessments,<br />
