Engineering and Operations Research<br />
Department who, in the opinion of the<br />
faculty and Board of Managers of the<br />
<strong>Columbia</strong> Engineering School Alumni<br />
Association, has been active in undergraduate<br />
activities and has displayed<br />
leadership, school spirit, and scholarship<br />
achievement.<br />
Wlliam A. Hadley Award in Mehanical<br />
Engineering<br />
Established in 1973 by Lucy Hadley in<br />
memory of her husband. The award is<br />
made annually in the form of a certificate<br />
and cash to that student in the graduating<br />
class in mechanical engineering who has<br />
best exemplified the ideals of character,<br />
scholarship, and service of Professor<br />
William A. Hadley.<br />
Thomas “Pop” Harrington Medal<br />
Presented annually to the student who<br />
best exemplifies the qualities of character<br />
that Professor Harrington exhibited<br />
during his forty years of teaching. The<br />
medal is made possible by Dr. Myron A.<br />
Coler.<br />
Yuen-huo Hung and Chao-chin Huang<br />
Award in Biomedical Engineering<br />
This award has been endowed to honor<br />
the grandfathers of Professor Clark T.<br />
Hung in the Department of Biomedical<br />
Engineering. His paternal grandfather,<br />
Yuen-huo Hung, was a surgeon in Taipei<br />
who was renowned for his practice of<br />
medicine and for his compassion toward<br />
patients. Professor Hung’s maternal<br />
grandfather, Chao-chin Huang, was a<br />
famous politician in Taiwan who dedicated<br />
his life to the citizens of his country,<br />
serving as mayor of Taipei, speaker of<br />
the Taiwan Provincial Assembly, and<br />
consul general to the United States. This<br />
award is given to a graduating doctoral<br />
student in the Department of Biomedical<br />
Engineering who embodies the collective<br />
attributes of these distinguished individuals.<br />
This student will have demonstrated<br />
great potential for making significant<br />
contributions to the fields of biomedical<br />
engineering and public health, and for<br />
serving as an ambassador of biomedical<br />
engineering.<br />
Illig Medal<br />
Established in 1898 by a bequest from<br />
William C. Illig, E.M., 1882, and awarded<br />
by the faculty to a member of the graduating<br />
class for commendable proficiency<br />
in his or her regular studies.<br />
Eliahu I. Jury Award<br />
Established 1991 for outstanding<br />
achievement by a graduate student in<br />
the areas of systems communication or<br />
signal processing.<br />
Charles Kandel Award<br />
Medal and cash prize presented annually<br />
by the <strong>Columbia</strong> Engineering School<br />
Alumni Association to that member<br />
of the graduating class who has best<br />
promoted the interests of the School<br />
through participation in extracurricular<br />
activities and student-alumni affairs.<br />
The Andrew P. Kosoresow Memorial<br />
Award for Excellence in Teaching<br />
and Service<br />
Awarded each year by the Department<br />
of Computer Science to up to three<br />
computer science students for outstanding<br />
contributions to teaching in<br />
the department and exemplary service<br />
to the department and its mission.<br />
Dongju Lee Memorial Award<br />
Established in 2005 by family and friends<br />
in memory of Dongju Lee (DJ), graduate<br />
student in the Department of Civil<br />
Engineering and Engineering Mechanics,<br />
1999–2003. A certificate and cash prize<br />
awarded annually by the department to<br />
a doctoral student specializing in geotechnical/geoenvironmental<br />
engineering<br />
and of outstanding promise for a career<br />
in research and academia.<br />
Sebastian B. Littauer Award<br />
Established in 1979 in honor of Professor<br />
Littauer, a certificate and cash prize presented<br />
annually by the Department of<br />
Industrial Engineering and Operations<br />
Research to a senior for outstanding<br />
promise of scholarly and professional<br />
achievement in operations research.<br />
Mechanical Engineering<br />
Certificate of Merit<br />
In recognition of excellence in undergraduate<br />
studies.<br />
Henry L. Michel Award in<br />
Civil Engineering<br />
Established by the <strong>Columbia</strong> Engineering<br />
School Alumni Association in memory of<br />
Henry M. Michel (1949), who built Parsons<br />
Brinkerhoff and MacDonald into one of<br />
the world’s leading engineering companies.<br />
A certificate and cash prize is presented<br />
annually by the Department of Civil<br />
Engineering and Engineering Mechanics<br />
to a student or group of students in the<br />
Civil Engineering Depart-ment who<br />
demonstrate outstanding promise of<br />
leadership and professional achievement<br />
in civil and construction engineering.<br />
The award is in support of a project with<br />
emphasis on the construction industry<br />
in which the students participate.<br />
Paul Michelman Award for Exemplary<br />
Service to the Computer Science<br />
Department<br />
This award is given to a Ph.D. student in<br />
computer science who has performed<br />
exemplary service to the department,<br />
devoting time and effort beyond the call<br />
to further the department’s goals. It is<br />
given in memory of Dr. Paul Michelman<br />
’93, who devoted himself to improving<br />
our department through service while<br />
excelling as a researcher.<br />
Mindlin Scholar in Civil Engineering<br />
and Engineering Mechanics<br />
This award will be made each year to<br />
a graduate student in the Department of<br />
Civil Engineering and Engineering<br />
Mechanics in recognition of outstanding<br />
promise of a creative career in research<br />
and/or practice. This award is made<br />
possible by gifts of friends, colleagues,<br />
and former students of Professor<br />
Raymond D. Mindlin, and, above all, by<br />
the Mindlin family. It is intended to honor<br />
the Mindlin brothers, Raymond, Eugene,<br />
and Rowland, who excelled in their<br />
respective scientific fields of engineering<br />
research, engineering practice, and<br />
medical practice.<br />
Millman Award<br />
A certificate and prize, in honor of Jacob<br />
Millman, awarded to two of the most<br />
outstanding teaching assistants for the<br />
academic year.<br />
