Some daiyan 1 reported that women also come to them<br />

for check ups and to know about the position of the baby<br />

especially in 8 th month. Some advise women to go for an<br />

ultrasound and those who can afford act upon their advice.<br />

“I advise mothers to go for check up in the last month<br />

to check the position of the baby” (IDI, Dai-Pezu, Lakki<br />

Marwat)<br />

Lady health workers said that they advise women to go to<br />

the doctor for ANC during pregnancy but again only those<br />

who can afford go to the doctor.<br />

In both rural and urban areas, some women<br />

stated having a role in decision making about<br />

ANC, but they also emphasized that actions are taken<br />

with the permission of mothers-in-law in joint families and<br />

husbands in nuclear families.<br />

“In those households where mothers-in-law live with<br />

the couple the decision is made by the mother-in-law<br />

and in other households husbands take that decision”<br />

(FGD-Sarai Saleh, Haripur).<br />

Very few mothers spoke of family support from<br />

their husbands and mothers-in-law for seeking<br />

ANC, and they were mostly from urban areas or belonging<br />

to relatively well off families.<br />

“My husband and MIL decided for the check up. They<br />

were in favor of the check up” (IDI, Mo-Lakki 1, Lakki<br />

Marwat)<br />

In contrast to mothers’ opinion, some of the mothers-inlaw<br />

and husbands reported that they take the mothers for<br />

ANC; however, it appears that they take this action for the<br />

well-being of the fetus rather than for mother.<br />

“We took her to a doctor twice during pregnancy to<br />

see whether the baby was alright” (IDI, FIL-Pezu, Lakki<br />

Marwat)<br />

Care seeking largely depends on availability<br />

of money, education and support of the<br />

family members, and problems/illness during<br />

pregnancy. These factors will be discussed further in<br />

Section 7 dealing with “Seeking Care from Outside Home”.<br />

1.2 Dietary Changes in Pregnancy<br />

Very encouragingly, most participants in all FGDs<br />

expressed that there is relationship between<br />

the diet of mother and the health of newborn;<br />

however, there was variation among this perceived<br />

relationship. Majority believed that both mother and fetus<br />

benefit from better diet and mentioned that if the mother<br />

is weak, it has a bad impact on the health of the fetus.<br />

“There are some areas where the fetus/newborn dies;<br />

these people have nothing to eat. The fetus turns very<br />

weak and the mother suffers and she cannot give<br />

birth. All this depends on diet. If she eats healthy diet<br />

everything will be alright.” (FGD- Shakir Town, DG<br />

Khan).<br />

“Women increase their diets because both woman<br />

and fetus cannot live on the normal diet. In pregnancy<br />

women feel hungrier and elders say that we should<br />

eat whenever we feel hungry because if we stay<br />

hungry then the fetus is affected badly.” (FGD- Zeedi,<br />

Khuzdar).<br />

Only a few women denied any relationship between the<br />

diet of the mother and the health of the baby.<br />

“Health is given by God and does not depend on diet<br />

of the mother.” (FGD-Badal Bakus, Sukkur)<br />

Besides health in terms of size and normal shape of<br />

newborn, the diet of the mother was also related<br />

with the beauty of the newborn and relative ease in<br />

delivery.<br />

“We eat more so that the fetus is healthy and is<br />

delivered easily. The diet is also changed so that the<br />

baby becomes fair. For example, if a mother takes<br />

one apple and milk regularly her baby will have a fair<br />

complexion and is very healthy (Tagra)” (FGD-Wasti,<br />

Haripur)<br />

However, the change in diet was more in urban<br />

areas as compared to rural areas.<br />

“We change the diet so that the baby gets strength”<br />

(FGD-MC4, Charsadda)<br />

“We bring change in our diets and it is a must” (FGD-<br />

Ghazgi, Khuzdar)<br />

The change in diet is according to affordability, and mostly<br />

poor in rural areas do not make any change<br />

because they cannot afford.<br />
