Findings<br />
Informational • Mothers and other participants understand the importance of wrapping the newborn<br />
immediately after birth.<br />
• First three days milk is considered healthy by most of the participants, however, some women<br />
are still not feeding it to the newborns in all districts and most are not feeding it DG Khan.<br />
• Exclusive breastfeeding is considered important by only a very few women.<br />
• Some daiyan also advise to give other milk/fluids with breast milk or not to give first three days<br />
milk.<br />
Socio-cultural • Immediate wrapping of the baby before the delivery of placenta is generally practiced in<br />
household deliveries by daiyan.<br />
• Mustard oil, ghee, turmeric powder, surma, spirit, antibiotics are applied on the cord.<br />
• Generally mothers/care takers try to keep the newborn warm.<br />
• The first bath is given as early as possible and is not considered to harm the newborn in all<br />
districts, except DG Khan.<br />
• Moderately warm water is used for bathing during winters only.<br />
• Generally the newborn is bathed outside in the yard during summers as it is considered that<br />
the newborn will get warmth from the sunshine.<br />
• Mothers in some districts realize the importance of keeping clean.<br />
• Gender differences in taking care of the newborn are reported in several districts in both<br />
urban and rural areas.<br />
