Household management practices for cord<br />

problems: Following were reported to be the household<br />

management practices for cord problems, and some of<br />

these are harmful for the newborn as they can cause or<br />

exacerbate infections:<br />

• A pinch of turmeric powder is applied on the cord<br />

2-3 times a day. If it doesn’t recover in a week then<br />

the newborn is taken to a doctor (Charsadda, Lakki<br />

Marwat, Sukkur).<br />

• Ghee, oil and surma are applied (Khuzdar, DG Khan,<br />

Jhelum, Charsadda, Sukkur).<br />

• Garlic is heated in ghee, ginger and onion are heated in<br />

ghee and applied (Khuzdar, Jhelum).<br />

• Mustard oil is applied (Pishin, Haripur, Lakki Marwat).<br />

• Burned carom seeds, grinded or burnt onion, grinded<br />

cloves are applied (Jhelum).<br />

• onion is heated in oil and applied<br />

• Spirit or dettol is applied (Pishin, DG Khan, Jhelum,<br />

Haripur, Sukkur).<br />

• Piodine is applied (Pishin).<br />

• Ashes of wood are applied (Khuzdar).<br />

• Henna is applied (Khuzdar).<br />

• Heeng is applied (DG Khan).<br />

• Phitkari (alum) is applied (DG Khan)<br />

• A five rupee coin is stick on the cord for a week if the<br />

cord is swelled (Jhelum, Sukkur).<br />

• Polyfax is applied (Pishin, Jhelum, Sukkur).<br />

• Penicillin (DG Khan)<br />

• A powder available at medical stores (most probably<br />

Cicatrin) is bought from the market and applied<br />

(Jhelum, Haripur, Lakki Marwat).<br />

• Hurbo (a herbal medicines) is brought from market and<br />

baby is made to eat it (Dadu).<br />

• Some mothers however, prefer to leave it as it is and<br />

wait for it to recover by itself. If the cord infection<br />

does not recover only then a doctor is visited.<br />

LHWs advise to put Cicatrin (antibiotic) powder (Sukkur)<br />

and spirit (Haripur) on cord for any problem.<br />

Infections of eyes<br />

For eyes participants mentioned watering of eyes, difficulty<br />

in opening eyes, filth and pus discharge from eyes.<br />

Local terminologies for eye problems are given in<br />

Appendix 3.<br />

Reasons for eye problems: Following were reported<br />

as the reasons for eye problems. As evident, many are<br />

medical reasons while others are misconceptions:<br />

• If dai touches the newborn with dirty hands (Sukkur)<br />

or mother’s finger or dai’’s finger, nail or instrument<br />

hits the eye during delivery (Khuzdar, Jhelum).<br />

• Filthy water from mother’s womb enters baby’s eyes<br />

during delivery (Dadu, Khuzdar, Charsadda, Sukkur),<br />

or placenta’s water gets in the eyes of the newborn<br />

(Sukkur).<br />

• Cord touches the eye during delivery (DG Khan) or<br />

newborn’s hands touches the eye (Pishin), dirty cloth is<br />

touched with baby’s eyes (Khuzdar, Pishin) or mother<br />

cleans the baby with carelessness (Pishin).<br />

• Baby is not kept clean (Jhelum) or dirt sticks in eyes<br />

(Jhelum).<br />

• Dust enters baby’s eyes (Charsadda) or flies and filth<br />

around the baby causes it (DG Khan).<br />

• Surma stick hits the baby’s eye (Jhelum) or baby gets<br />

allergy to surma (Pishin)<br />

• Water or soap enters the eyes during bathing (Dadu,<br />

Jhelum) or mother’s milk gets into the eyes of baby<br />

(Charsadda).<br />

• Burning the straw causes the eyes to be affected<br />

(Jhelum).<br />

• Epidemic of eye disease (Jhelum).<br />

• Mother eats sweet or bitter things (Jhelum).<br />

• Some bad woman had carried the baby and cast evil eye<br />

(Jhelum).<br />

• If mother performs any activity during lunar eclipse it<br />

affects the fetus (Jhelum).<br />

• Eyes are spoiled because of hot weather or if baby is<br />

wrapped too much during summers (Sukkur), or if baby<br />

suffers from fever (Dadu).<br />

• Baby does not sleep properly (Dadu).<br />

• If the baby is weak his/her eyes water and do not open<br />

(Sukkur).<br />

• Problems are by birth or are hereditary (Pishin,<br />

Sukkur).<br />

A number of home management practices for eye problems<br />

were reported by the participants. In case the eyes do not<br />

recover with home remedies the neonate is taken to a<br />

doctor. The reported home remedies are as follows:<br />

• Cotton is dipped in oil and kept in water for about 12<br />

hours. Then the eyes of the newborn are massaged with<br />

it (Dadu, Jhelum, Sukkur).<br />

• Cotton is dipped in water and eyes are cleaned<br />

(Khuzdar, Pishin, Jhelum, Haripur)<br />

• Rose water is put in the eyes, twice or thrice a day<br />

(Dadu, Khuzdar, Jhelum, Haripur, Lakki Marwat, Sukkur,<br />

Haripur).<br />

• Penicillin ointment is applied on eyes (Sukkur).<br />

• Stop applying surma in eyes (Sukkur). In contrast, surma<br />

is applied in other districts (Pishin, DG Khan, Jhelum,<br />

Lakki Marwat).<br />

• Cord that comes off is dipped in water and that water is<br />
