Learner achievement was in excess of 90% for the above
learnerships. Gauteng Province achieved its targets on the entry of
learners in learning programmes (learnerships, skills programmes,
internships, WPE) as well as ensuring that 85% of the beneficiaries
were black and 54% were women.
The province has set up and now facilitates the FET Forum for
SDFs from the FET Colleges in order to collaborate on skills
development issues in the province.
Challenges
The greatest challenge was with the recruitment of disabled
learners. Recruitment of these learners is undertaken by the
employers who are challenged to find disabled learners. An effort
is being made to approach organisations that are supporting
people with disabilities to undertake recruitment via them. One
initiative was entered into in a partnership with the Thabo Mbeki
Development Trust to train 27 learners living with disabilities in
the OD-ETD Qualification.
Future Plans
The province intends to intensify its working relationships with all
stakeholders and constituencies and to set up a forum for HEIs
in the province. Assistance will also be provided in organising the
National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB). Plans
for the new financial year are under way and constituencies have
already been consulted regarding the recruitment of new learners.
