Silk Way. The structures that China tries to present as having been administrative<br />

units of the central Chinese administration in the past are nothing but security<br />

stations they had erected along the Silk Way. After the Battle of Talas in 751,<br />

the Chinese left these lands for more than 1,000 years. 8 Therefore, the Chinese<br />

are in no way justified in the claim that East Turkistan has always been Chinese<br />

territory.<br />

The name “Xinjiang” (New Border), given to East Turkistan by the Chinese<br />

and the demographic structure of the Chinese Han people in East Turkistan in<br />

1940s and 1950s refute Chinese claims that East Turkistan was “always Chinese<br />

territory”.<br />
