AP 413. <strong>The</strong>rapeutics for the Physician<br />

Assistant I: This course prepares the physician<br />

assistant to manage drug therapy for patients<br />

in certain health care settings. Prerequisites:<br />

Fourth-year st<strong>and</strong>ing in the PA program or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. (U)(4)<br />

AP 415. <strong>The</strong>rapeutics for the Physician<br />

Assistant II: A continuation <strong>of</strong> AP 413. This<br />

course prepares the physician assistant to manage<br />

drug therapy for patients in certain health<br />

care settings. Prerequisite: AP 413 <strong>The</strong>rapeutics<br />

for PA1, AP 421 Clinical Medicine for PA 1,<br />

AP 406 Diagnostic <strong>and</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutic Procedures.<br />

AP 417. Diagnostic <strong>and</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutic<br />

Procedures II: A continuation <strong>of</strong> AP 406,<br />

Diagnostic & <strong>The</strong>rapeutic Procedures 1. This<br />

course will introduce the student to clinical<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> both diagnostic <strong>and</strong> therapeutic value<br />

in order to screen for, prevent, <strong>and</strong> treat disease<br />

entities. Prerequisite: Fourth-year st<strong>and</strong>ing in<br />

AP 421. Clinical Medicine for PA’s I: <strong>The</strong><br />

intricacies <strong>of</strong> human disease are taught through<br />

a systems approach. Each unit begins with<br />

a review <strong>of</strong> related anatomy <strong>and</strong> physiology<br />

followed by a discussion <strong>of</strong> pathophysiology<br />

signs <strong>and</strong> symptoms, diagnostic methods <strong>and</strong><br />

management. Prerequisite: Fourth year st<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

AP 433. Issues in Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Practice: A<br />

course designed to introduce PA students<br />

to past, current <strong>and</strong> emerging health care<br />

delivery systems <strong>and</strong> methods <strong>of</strong> financing<br />

health care. Also explored are issues confronting<br />

practicing pr<strong>of</strong>essionals such as ethics, quality/<br />

risk management, end-<strong>of</strong>-life decisions, <strong>and</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional liability. Prerequisite: Second<br />

AP 531. Elective Rotation: This is a two-week<br />

rotation where students have the opportunity to<br />

gain supervised experience in specialized areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> medical practice. Alternatively, the student<br />

may elect to gain additional experience in a<br />

primary care setting. Prerequisite: Fifth year<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing. (G)(4)<br />

AP 533 General Elective Rotation (4): This is<br />

a one month rotation where students have the<br />

opportunity to gain supervised experience in<br />

specialized areas <strong>of</strong> medical practice. Alternatively,<br />

the student may elect to gain additional<br />

experience in a primary care setting. Prerequisites:<br />

Fifth year st<strong>and</strong>ing. (G)(4)<br />

AP 540 Family Practice Rotation (6): This is<br />

a six week rotation in a family practice setting<br />

where students provide supervised care for<br />

patients ranging in age from newborns to the<br />

elderly. Patient care activities include eliciting<br />

histories, performing physicals, ordering/<br />

performing diagnostic tests, <strong>and</strong> formulating<br />

management plans. Prerequisite: Fifth year<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ing. (G)(6)<br />

AP 541 Internal Medicine Rotation (6):<br />

This is a six week rotation designed to expose<br />

students to the indications, limitations, <strong>and</strong><br />

methods <strong>of</strong> performing diagnostic <strong>and</strong> therapeutic<br />

measures used in the treatment <strong>of</strong> general<br />

medical disorders. Students will perform<br />

patient care activities in a supervised clinical<br />

setting. Prerequisite: Fifth year st<strong>and</strong>ing. (G)(6)<br />

AP 542 Pediatric Rotation (6): This is a<br />

six week rotation in a pediatric setting where<br />

students provide supervised care for newborns,<br />

infants, children <strong>and</strong> adolescents. Patient<br />

care activities center around assessing normal<br />

growth <strong>and</strong> development, <strong>and</strong> diagnosing <strong>and</strong><br />

formulating management plans for conditions<br />

commonly encountered in the pediatric population.<br />

Prerequisite: Fifth year st<strong>and</strong>ing. (G)(6)<br />

AP 543 Community Mental <strong>Health</strong> Rotation<br />

(6): This is a six week rotation in a mental<br />

health setting where students provide supervised<br />

care <strong>of</strong> patients being treated for minor<br />

psychiatric diseases <strong>and</strong> mental stresses. Patient<br />

care activities center on proper data collection,<br />

problem recognition, counseling techniques<br />

<strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong> referral mechanisms. Prerequisite:<br />

Fifth year st<strong>and</strong>ing. (G)(6)
