Master <strong>of</strong> Science in<br />

Pharmaceutical <strong>Sciences</strong> Degree<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> & <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fers the Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Pharmaceutical<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> in five areas <strong>of</strong> emphasis: pharmaceutics,<br />

pharmacology, medicinal chemistry,<br />

pharmacy administration <strong>and</strong> clinical sciences.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program involves an intensive curriculum<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> didactic courses <strong>and</strong> thesis<br />

research. Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the MS in<br />

Pharmaceutical <strong>Sciences</strong> degree requires<br />

successful completion <strong>of</strong> at least 30 semester<br />

credit hours with not less than 6 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

research credit. <strong>The</strong> research must be compiled<br />

into a thesis, which is presented <strong>and</strong> defended<br />

in front <strong>of</strong> the committee. Details <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Studies section on page 291.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Physician Assistant<br />

Studies<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a Master <strong>of</strong> Physician Assistant Studies<br />

(MPAS) degree for those completing the<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the physician assistant program.<br />

PAs practice medicine under the supervision<br />

<strong>of</strong> licensed physicians, providing patient care<br />

services that would otherwise be done by<br />

physicians. PAs perform a wide range <strong>of</strong> medical<br />

duties including obtaining medical histories,<br />

performing physical examinations, developing/<br />

implementing comprehensive diagnostic <strong>and</strong><br />

patient management plans, providing patient<br />

education <strong>and</strong> counseling, ordering <strong>and</strong> interpreting<br />

diagnostic tests, performing therapeutic<br />

procedures <strong>and</strong> prescribing medications. PAs<br />

practice in a variety <strong>of</strong> settings <strong>and</strong> specialties,<br />

with their specific practice activities guided by<br />

the specialty <strong>of</strong> the supervising physician <strong>and</strong><br />

the setting <strong>of</strong> the practice.<br />

<strong>The</strong> physician assistant program requires<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> a two-year prepr<strong>of</strong>essional curriculum<br />

<strong>and</strong> a three-year pr<strong>of</strong>essional curriculum.<br />

<strong>The</strong> prepr<strong>of</strong>essional curriculum, in addition to<br />

including the <strong>Butler</strong> core curriculum requirements,<br />

emphasizes college-level preparation in<br />

mathematics <strong>and</strong> life sciences. <strong>The</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

phase, which begins with the third year, consists<br />

<strong>of</strong> a two-year preclinical component <strong>and</strong> a<br />

12-month clinical component. During the<br />

pre-clinical phase, students receive instruction<br />

in anatomy, physiology, pathology, social <strong>and</strong>
