2.4.3. Expectations of Customers
The following sections will focus on customer implementations of enterprise data centers. Service data center
operators can call upon experience in their efforts to meet the expectations of customers.
Availability
The first section will discuss availability, including hardware and software security, reliable infrastructure and
organizational security. In connection with data centers, the main points are:
• Uninterrupted IT operations
• 24/7 availability, 24/7 monitoring, 24/7 access
• Flexibility in power supply and climate control to meet specific needs (rising trend)
• On-demand models can be displayed
• Structural and technical fire protection
• Security systems such as burglar alarms, access control, video surveillance, building security, security
personnel, security lighting, central building controls systems, etc.
• Choice between several carriers, redundant connections
• Cost optimization
• Green IT, sustainability
• Energy efficiency
• Short response times for upgrades and extensions
• Low latencies to meet the growing requirements in terms of internet presence
• Data centers should be outside of flood-risk areas, dangerous production sites, airports, power plants or
other high-risk zones
• Distance between two data center sites
• Profitability
It can be observed that availability requirements are very high at the beginning of a project, but they are not
necessarily reflected in expectations in terms of price per m 2 /kVA.
Availability = security = costs
Companies are strongly recommended to check their requirements of availability on a project-specific level if
appropriate and to evaluate alternative concepts (e.g. the 2-location concept).
Determining availability not only has an impact on installation costs but also on operating costs. The Swiss Federal
Office of Energy (SFOE) has developed a cost model for transparent analysis. The graphic below is part of it.
