Media Industry // Medienbranche vs. Economic Crisis // Wirtschaftskrise Dear reader, 2008 began with a financial crisis in the U.S. and ended with a worldwide economic one that we’ll remember for years to come. While last year, the news of companies losing hundreds of millions of dollars still managed to shock us, these days, it takes trillion-dollar losses to give us that queasy feeling. At this time, we can only guess at the true magnitude of the whole affair. The foremost question in the minds of media professionals and those interested in media training is certainly this: How will the crisis affect us? Just a few years back during the crisis of the “new economy”, it was the media companies who were hit the hardest. This time around, it’s mostly financial institutions, the automotive industry and insurance and real estate companies who are suffering the brunt of the economic downturn. Maybe surviving the media industry crisis at the beginning of the new millennium gave media companies the strength to ride out even an economic catastrophe of global proportions. Media companies rarely make dramatic headlines these days. When a multinational corporation like Google considers laying off 100 employees, this seems almost laughable compared to the more than 100,000 jobs that are hanging in the balance in the financial and the automotive sectors. Lagging sales of daily newspapers and journals reported by publishers seem to be a sign of the Internet era rather than the after-effects of the struggling global economy. The downward trend in circulation and ad sales for print media were old news even before the crisis hit. Looking at the 20% increase in online advertising revenue for 2008, it’s easy to see where most of that money went. Naturally, some media companies will feel the sting of their clients’ advertising budget cuts this year. Then again, the IT and media sectors are experiencing a severe skills shortage in spite of the gloomy economic outlook, which has sent demand for SAE Graduates soaring in many cities. In the past few months, more than 1,000 job offers were listed on SAE’s online job terminal on mySAE.org alone. Experience shows that, in times of economic downswing and increasing unemployment, the demand for top-quality, industry-oriented training is higher than ever. And that’s why, without fail, SAE’s training programs have enjoyed a surge of popularity during every crisis in the past 35 years. A definite cause for cautious optimism in a time of widespread pessimism. ;-) Enjoy the 10 th issue of SAE Magazine. Chris Chris Müller editorial // service Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser, das Jahr 2008 begann mit einer Bankenkrise in den USA und endete mit einer weltweiten Wirtschaftskrise, die uns noch längere Zeit in Erinnerung bleiben wird. Während uns letztes Jahr Meldungen mit Unternehmensverlusten im Bereich von Hundert Millionen noch geschockt haben, reagieren wir heute erst besorgt, wenn von „Billionen-Verschuldung“ die Rede ist. Nun, über das letztendliche Ausmaß der Krise lässt sich momentan nur spekulieren. Die Frage, die sich nun viele Medienschaffende und Ausbildungsinteressierte stellen, ist sicherlich wie sich die Krise auf die Medienlandschaft auswirken wird. Während noch vor wenigen Jahren bei der Krise der „New Economy“ gerade die Medienunternehmen im Mittelpunkt standen, ist es derzeit ruhig um die damaligen Verlierer. Vielmehr stehen heute neben Banken vor allem Autobauer, Versicherer und Immobilienunternehmen im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Vielleicht ist auch die Medienkrise der Jahrhundertwende die große Chance der Medienfirmen, nun solide und gestärkt eine Weltwirtschaftskrise zu überstehen. Negativschlagzeilen von Medienunternehmen sind derzeit tatsächlich eher selten oder von geringem Ausmaß. Wenn ein Weltkonzern wie Google von einer drohenden Entlassung von 100 Mitarbeitern spricht, ist das verglichen mit über hundert Tausend gefährdeten Arbeitsplätzen in der Finanz- und Automobilbranche fast schon lächerlich. Auch der Umsatzeinbruch, den Verlagshäuser bei Tageszeitungen und Zeitschriften verzeichnen, scheint mehr ein Phänomen des fortschreitenden Internet-Zeitalters zu sein als eine Folge der globalen Wirtschaftskrise. Rückläufige Auflagen und Anzeigenverkäufe bei Printmedien waren schon vor der Krise ein alter Hut. Betrachtet man die um mehr als 20 Prozent gestiegenen Online- Werbeeinnahmen im Jahr 2008, wundert man sich auch nicht weiter über die Verluste der Print-Kollegen. Nun, sicherlich werden die gekürzten Werbebudgets vieler Unternehmen einige Medienunternehmen spürbar treffen und für Umsatzeinbrüche im laufenden Jahr sorgen. Andererseits herrscht insbesondere in der IT- und Medienbranche trotz Wirtschaftskrise weiterhin ein extremer Fachkräftemangel, auch die Nachfrage der Industrie nach SAE Absolventen ist derzeit an vielen Standorten hoch wie nie. Allein im SAE Online- Jobterminal auf mySAE.org wurden in den vergangenen Monaten über 1.000 Jobs von Medienfirmen angeboten. Generell zeigt die Erfahrung, dass gerade bei steigender Arbeitslosigkeit und in wirtschaftlich schwierigen Zeiten das Bewusstsein für qualitativ hochwertige und industrienahe Ausbildungen steigt. SAE konnte daher bei allen Krisen der letzten 35 Jahre eine merklich steigende Nachfrage nach Ausbildungsplätzen feststellen. Trotz Krise also Grund für verhaltenen Optimismus in einer von Pessimismus geprägten Phase. ;-) Viel Spaß mit der 10. Ausgabe unseres SAE Magazins. Chris 3
