Academic Dishonesty: Guidelines for Students 1. What is Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty means any act of deceiving or cheating in work done as part of the School’s curricular and extra-curricular programme at any place or time. Deceitful acts include copying another person’s work or allowing one’s own work to be copied; carrying or passing information unfairly in class, in a test or examination; falsifying data; telling lies in relation to work, avoiding work set; or tested; stealing other people’s work or ideas (this is known as plagiarism). Plagiarism means presenting another person’s work (for example, from a textbook) as if it were your own. If you do not use quotation marks or fail to give the name of the author, the title of the book and page reference (this we call ‚acknowledging the source‛), you are committing an act of plagiarism – even if non-deliberate. 2. Cheating Yourself Students are tempted to cheat for various reasons. It may gain them short-term respite or advantage to cover up lack of preparation or to avoid censure from teachers, parents or fellow students; it may hide difficulties they are having in understanding or covering work, or hide underlying problems that need to be faced and solved. Cheating is not the answer. Progress can never be made through academic dishonesty and, in the end, you cheat yourself of a proper education. If you are having trouble with your work, tell somebody. Seek help. Lying, (for example, ‚I forgot to bring my essay‛) or copying (for example from ‚a friend‛ or a book in the library) will only compound your difficulties. SECTION 3 - 6 -

(a) submit work copied from another person (b) allow your work to be copied (c) copy from a source without acknowledgement (plagiarism) (d) hog, monopolize or hide School books or library books (e) alter a record, grade sheet, report, letter of reference or similar document (f) forge a letter, signature, reply-slip or similar document (g) change marks or scores (h) misrepresent your results, certificates or other credentials (i) disobey instructions in a test or examination (remember if you talk after being told not to in an exam it is an act of cheating no matter what you were saying or what your intentions were). (j) Allow an act of cheating to go unreported 4. Finally Remember Remember the Uplands School motto: ‚Respect for self; respect for others‛. Academic dishonesty demeans yourself, and destroys trust and healthy relationships. Within Schools – as in the wider world – many a potentially fine person has incurred loss of happiness and peace of mind, public respect, career – indeed has gone to prison - because they altered a report, forged a signature or told a lie.
