History Uplands was established in 1955 on Penang Hill as the initiative of the Incorporated Society of Planters (I.S.P) to provide an education in a safe environment for the children of the planting community. Uplands School began operations under the aegis of the I.S.P. Schools Association which was incorporated on 15 March 1955. The new school which was open to all, absorbed a small private school on Penang Hill called “Uplands”, adopting its name and utilizing its premises, the bungalow “Grace Dieu”. In May 1955, the School moved into buildings of the former Crag Hotel which was to be the home of Uplands on Penang Hill for the next 22 years. Primary boarders made up the enrolment until 1976 when the first day student was admitted. In 1977, a Secondary Department was started. In 1977, Uplands left Penang Hill for its new home at sea level, occupying the former St. Xavier’s Branch School on Kelawei Road in Pulau Tikus as well as boarding houses first on Burmah Road and later on York Road. It was not until 1988 that Uplands acquired the use of the former St. Joseph’s Novitiate, the beautiful heritage building behind the Primary School and facing Gurney Drive and the sea, in a move that finally brought the whole school, including boarders, together on the same campus. In 2005, after 28 years in Pulau Tikus and 50 years in leased accommodation, Uplands made its biggest move of all on 09 September 2006 to its own purpose-built campus in Batu Feringgi. Current Campus Just 30 minutes away from the city, the current campus is located on a pleasant hill overlooking the beachfront; the 4-acre campus is fully networked and has complete wireless access, while a beautiful garden courtyard accentuates its peaceful surroundings conducive for learning. The four main blocks are interconnected with seamless corridors that have been designed to provide greater security for students and staff, its compactness affording easier intercommunication and movement on the campus. The school features: • 36 fully air-conditioned classrooms • 5 science laboratories • A multi purpose hall with gymnasium • A refectory • An artificial turf sports field • A 25-metre swimming pool • Well-resourced Senior Library and Primary Library • Dedicated IT suites, language labs and AV equipped media rooms • Performing Arts and Music studios • Design Technology design room and workshop • Connection to the School network and Internet at all Boarding Houses Boarding Boarding accommodation, located 2 km away from the campus, is based in ten semi-detached houses that are inter-linked.
