contrast to sou<strong>the</strong>rn California, <strong>the</strong><br />

coastl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> this region is sparsely<br />

populated. It has not been without<br />

modification, however. In sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

British Columbia, Moody (1978) reported<br />

that <strong>the</strong> sdnd and mud flats <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fraser<br />

River foreshore, which supports extensive<br />

<strong>meadows</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>eelgrass</strong>, were threatened by an<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong> residential,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrial, and recreational developnents.<br />

<strong>The</strong> largest <strong>meadows</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>eelgrass</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>Northwest</strong> occur <strong>in</strong> protected<br />

estuar<strong>in</strong>e areas away from <strong>the</strong> open coast;<br />

i.e., Padilla and Willapa Bays <strong>in</strong><br />

Wash<strong>in</strong>gton State, and Humboldt Bay <strong>in</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn California. <strong>The</strong> largest stand <strong>in</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn Oregon occurs <strong>in</strong> Netarts Bay,<br />

while small stands are conf<strong>in</strong>ed to several<br />

narrow river valleys (Figure 3). This<br />

report also <strong>in</strong>cludes Z. japonica Aschers.<br />

& Graebn., s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>species is heavily<br />

used as food by black brant geese.<br />
