<strong>eelgrass</strong> beds. 8lortallty <strong>of</strong> eggs and<br />

juvenile herr<strong>in</strong>g may be as great as 5d1&<br />

(Outrdrn 195b; pers. comln., 1931).<br />

In north temperate <strong>eelgrass</strong> beds,<br />

wdterfowl dre <strong>the</strong> prlrndry herbivores on<br />

llv<strong>in</strong>y plants. 'i'hls is <strong>in</strong> direct contrast<br />

to <strong>the</strong> troplcs where a larye number <strong>of</strong><br />

fish and sea urch<strong>in</strong>s are dlrect grazers.<br />

<strong>The</strong> blrds on <strong>the</strong> Pacifrc coast edt a<br />

varlety <strong>of</strong> products from <strong>the</strong> <strong>eelgrass</strong><br />

beds: waterfowl such as black bratlt,<br />

Canada y eese, emperor geese, wigeons,<br />

scoters, cnrivas~ack ducks, arid coots eat<br />

eelqrass vegetation; plntalls, mallards,<br />

and green-wlng tedls gorge on <strong>eelgrass</strong><br />

seeds and epiphytic pelecypods on <strong>the</strong><br />

blacles before ~nigratlng from Izentbek<br />

Lagwn (~cRoy and delfferlch 19Uld); and<br />

mdny shorebirds and solrle ducks go to<br />

<strong>eelgrass</strong> becis to fed or1 assa'latcxi fauna<br />
