The principal exports are gold, wool, cattle, hides, grain, ostrich feathers,<br />
ivory, and minerals. The value of imports on which dues were charged<br />
amounted in 1894 to 6,440,2152.; in 1895 to 9,816,304Z.; in 1898 to<br />
34,088,130i. ; in 1897, 13,563,8272. ; in 1898, 10,632,8932. The import<br />
duties amounted in 1896 to 1,355,4862., in 1897 to 1,289,0392., in 1898 to<br />
1,066,9952.<br />
The imports into the Transvaal through Cape Colony in the year 1898-99<br />
amounted to the value of 3,385,3492., and in 1899-1900 to 737,3562. The<br />
chief imports through Cape Colony in these years were :—<br />

In the first 9 months of 1900 there were no imports through Cape<br />
Colony ; in the 3 months, July-September, they amounted to 98,2282.<br />
Of the total imports in 1898 the value of 6,332,1742. came from Europe,<br />
1,158,9722. from Cape Colony, 1,203,2392. from Natal, 920,2892. from the<br />
Orange Free State, 536,7222. from Lourengo Marquez, and 481,4972. from<br />
other countries.<br />
The Various railway lines connect the Transvaal with the Orange River<br />
Colony, Cape Colony, Natal, and Portuguese East Africa. The total mileage<br />
open in September, 1898, was 774, under construction 270, and projected 252.<br />
The Colony is in telegraphic communication with the surrounding<br />
Colonies as far north as Blantyre, near Lake Nyasa. The lines within the<br />
Colony extend over 2,200 miles ; length of wire, 5,650 miles; number of<br />
telegraph offices, 145.<br />
Weights and measures are the same as in Cape- Colony, the currency is<br />
English money, and gold, silver, and bronze coin issued from a mint established<br />
in Pretoria. From 1892 to June 30, 1897, the nominal value of the<br />
coin issued from the mint was : gold, 1,342,4152. ; silver, 288,6522. ; bronze,<br />
3892. ; total, 1,631,4562.<br />
Swaziland has an area of about 8,500 square miles, with a population<br />
estimated at 40,000 to 50,000 natives and between 900 and 1,200 whites.<br />
During the winter months this number is increased by trekkers from the<br />
Transvaal. The language spoken is a dialect of Zulu, and the habits and<br />
customs are for the most part identical with those of Zululand.<br />
By the Convention of 1884 the territory was under the administration<br />
of the South African Republic, and has now passed under that of Great<br />
Britain.<br />
