creates space
for research &
development in
Heidelberg
The biotechnology specialist completed its new Research Center in Heidelberg on schedule
in October 2012. Some 50 employees undertake research into recombinant plasma products
in the vicinity of major medical and clinical facilities. Drees & Sommer life sciences experts
supported the project during the planning and construction phases.
Thanks to its offices in Munich and
Stuttgart, Drees & Sommer was close
at hand while supporting planning in
Martinsried and the subsequent tender
process and realization in Heidelberg.
This separation of tasks made it possible
for Octapharma to continue to focus
on research, while the project managers
controlled processes on the construction
site. That was particularly important as
the new building was to set the standard
for the company’s future buildings.

In future, Heidelberg will not only undertake
innovative research in the field of
recombinant proteins, but also promote
the development and clinical production
of new medicines. A feature of the new
building is a six-meter high room
that can accommodate a 1,000-liter
fermenter for production. It also houses
a laboratory and office facilities for up
to 120 employees. Expansion areas
are primarily located on the third floor,
with GMP-compliant laboratories
taking up most of the first (ground)
and second floors.
Drees & Sommer impressed clients
with its professional work: In Dessau,
colleagues from the Leipzig office are
already supporting Octapharma’s
next expansion project.

With some 4,500 employees, Octapharma
has specialized in development, production
and sale of high-quality preparations
derived from human plasma and human
cell lineages. The products help patients
with coagulation disorders and immunodeficiency
in over 80 countries, and
modern intensive care and emergency
medical treatment are unthinkable
without them.
The company now has production
facilities at five sites in Austria, France,
Germany, Sweden and Mexico. Octapharma
Biopharmaceuticals GmbH
was founded in 1997. With premises of
just 1,400 square meters in Martinsried
near Munich, the subsidiary has recorded
a steady growth since its foundation.

In 2009, production capacity in Martinsried
was too small and urgently needed
space for growth was not available at
the site. For this reason, the company
gravitated towards the Rhine-
Neckar region – a booming center
for the life sciences-industry.
After examining several options,
Octapharma acquired a building
site in the Technology Park in Heidelberg,
Germany. The new location offers
plenty of space and is located close to
prestigious medical and clinical
institutions such as the German Cancer
Research Center and the Heidelberg
University Hospital.
Customer proximity
Thanks to Drees & Sommer’s many years
of experience with projects in the life
sciences industry, a team of experts
from the company was commissioned
to support the planning and realization
of the 10,000 square meter new building.
The special feature of the project was
that the principal remained completely
operational in Martinsried right up to
the relocation in March 2012.
