Client
New Holland Development, St. Petersburg
aiming for an attractive mix of uses
The more recent history of the island is
almost as colorful: Only after an investor
competition based on a design by Norman
Foster failed before the global financial
crisis a breakthrough was achieved in
2011. Roman Abramowitsch’s Millhouse
Group brought continuity to the project
by purchasing the rights to the island
and making a commitment to investing in
the property. He initiated redevelopment
with guidance from his London-based Iris
Foundation and the project company New
Holland Development.
The new investor’s goal is to establish a
cultural center on the island with theaters,
museums, exhibition rooms and various
training institutes. At the same time, a
multipurpose complex is to be created,
which complements the cultural facilities
with an efficient commercial infrastructure
consisting of hotels, apartments,
retail outlets and office buildings. The
international architectural competition
held in 2011 for the redesign and
redevelopment of New Holland was won
by the American firm WORKac. Features
of the design include creating attractive
public rooms and parklands as well
as ensuring high-quality – and even
exclusive – uses for both existing
buildings and those yet to be built.
growing workload for drees & sommer
The historic brick buildings, which had
been neglected for decades, have been
undergoing conservation measures since
2011. Back in the summer of 2012 the
island was opened up for the general
public and visitors to the city. Temporary
parklands, games and sports facilities,
cafes and exhibitions attract people
to the island in the warmer months and
have proved very popular.
Since 2011, Drees & Sommer has
been undertaking technical monitoring
(Russian: Stroitelniy Kontrol) of the safety
and rehabilitation work on the historic
properties on the island, thus giving the
principal great security, particularly
with regard to construction progress and
adherence to quality specifications.
In 2012 the St. Petersburg Drees & Sommer
team was given the addition role of
awarding technical contracts (Technitscheskiy
Szakashik). The energy specialists
are also supporting the company
with the development of an innovative
and efficient energy supply concept for
the island’s future use. The transfer of
further tasks is planned.
The project is one of the city’s strategically
most important development
projects. And an important step for
Drees & Sommer, too.
The extensive interior of the island offers visitors
a glimpse of the numerous attractions
