ConstruCtion of new zoo enClosures
Client
Zoo Rostock gGmbH
Challenging construction for animals
and visitors
The zoo planned the extension building
internally for ten years. By 2008, the
analysis of all flora-fauna areas, a site
report and environmental and geotechnical
reports were all complete. At
the end of 2009 Drees & Sommer was
planning and the tender documentation.
This was necessary to allow the general
contractor to meet requirements with
regard to the housing of the animals.
Another focal point was the integration
and synchronization of planning
processes for structural engineering and
building services equipment with media
economic structures (GRW). The
Drees & Sommer experts controlled
compliance with budget by undertaking
a ‘Red Point’ campaign. This
allowed systematic scrutiny of planning
with the planners and principal, and
the identification of savings potential.
Effective communication is essential
construction of the Darwineum. The
project managers checked whether
the various animal enclosures were
compliant with regulations. Through
comprehensive project organization
the team controlled the individual
construction stages and ensured timely
completion of the project.
Large aquariums reflect underwater life
The innovative exhibition concept – a mixture of edutainment and education – is supported by modern interior
Whether dinosaurs or Galapagos tortoises – visitors
both young and old get their money’s worth here
commissioned to undertake project
control of the new building. Following
the granting of planning permission,
work on the new building started in 2010
with adherence to cost, schedule and
quality specifications being key issues.
A range of priorities made the project
extremely challenging. First, the specific
requirements for the accommodation
of great apes had to be integrated into
exhibition planning. The Drees & Sommer
project managers coordinated requirements
planning before the start of
construction to avoid costly changes
during construction.
monitoring costs and assuring quality
A large share of the funding – some € 23
million – was a subsidy from the German
government’s publicly funded joint
scheme for the improvement of regional
for a project of this magnitude.
Drees & Sommer’s Project Communication
System (PCS) kept all participants
up-to-date at all times.
The principal also benefited from transparent
decision documents presented
by the project managers based on status
and as the need arose. Each species has
different welfare requirements. So careful
quality control was essential during the
