Lutheran Social Services of Mid-America ($8,700) To help provide Internet access and training that will enable individuals to search for and complete job applications online. This service is part of Lutheran Social Services’ technology training program for clients of its Learn to Earn welfare-to-work program. Montgomery County Children Services ($7,350) To support Project Quick Access, which provides caseworkers responding to child abuse and neglect emergency calls quick access through wireless laptop computers to the agency’s database of client-specific information. Neighborhood Schools Center ($50,000) To fund, over a two-year period, a plan for utilizing school buildings for the benefit of their neighborhoods. Planned Parenthood of the Greater Miami Valley ($7,500) To support the SEEK (Sexuality Education Empowers Kids) Program, which provides age-appropriate sexuality education for at-risk youth, enabling them to make informed, healthy decisions regarding sex, teen pregnancy prevention and personal values. Rebuilding Together Dayton ($10,000) To assist the organization in fulfilling additional requests for minor home repairs or modifications, such as wheelchair ramps or handrails, for lowincome elderly or disabled individuals. Shelter Policy Board ($15,000) To continue its mission to improve the lives of homeless individuals in the community and to strengthen the continuum of services available to support these individuals in their move to permanent housing. We Care Arts ($10,000) To facilitate in renovating a new facility to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The larger facility will provide a safe environment in which individuals with acquired brain injuries, severe mental illness and learning disabilities can build life, job and communication skills through art programs. Public/Society Benefit Downtown Dayton Partnership Corporation ($15,000) To assist in a strategic planning process to determine the next major amenity that will aid in downtown Dayton’s continued growth, well-being and prosperity. National Conference for Community and Justice ($5,000) To support the Middle School Leadership Development Program, which uses literature, film, current events and hands-on activities to educate students We Care Arts about discrimination, prejudice, racism and bias. United Way of Greater Dayton Area ($10,000) To help stimulate new and increased gifts to the United Way Campaign through a Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park challenge grant program. Challenge grants will fund programs and projects addressing new and emerging community needs. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park ($5,000) To replace lights that illuminate the Park’s Ring of Remembrance, which lists the names of local individuals who perished in the Vietnam War. The current lights were destroyed by vandals and will be replaced with cast-iron shielded fixtures to prevent future damage. 10 Grants and Programs: The Dayton Foundation Report to the Community 2003-2004
Legacy Partnership Multi-Year Discretionary Grant Commitments As part of the Governing Board’s multi-year commitments to support the Foundation’s leadership initiatives, The Dayton Foundation made three additional discretionary grants, totaling $362,500 to the following organizations in 2003-2004. Arts Center Foundation ($100,000) Year five of a sixyear $1 million commitment to stimulate the ongoing revitalization of downtown Dayton and interest in the performing arts and to benefit the Greater Miami Valley through the construction of the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center. Schuster Performing Arts Center Out-of-School-Youth Program Sinclair Community College ($150,000) Year two of a six-year $1 million commitment to assist the Out-of- School-Youth Program in developing the Fast-Forward Project that recruits, assesses and mentors at-risk youth and links them to alternative learning or training opportunities. Miami Valley Teacher/Leadership Academy Montgomery County Education Services Center ($112,500) Year four of a four-year $450,000 commitment to assist the Miami Valley Teacher/Leadership Academy in providing quality professional development opportunities for Miami Valley educators to ultimately enhance students’ education. Designated, Advised and Directed Grants from Endowments Additionally, grants flow from over 950 designated, advised and directed funds established at The Dayton Foundation. Donors specify designated grants in their fund agreement. Donor-advised fund donors, their designees or an advisory board advise grants, which are subject to final approval by the Foundation. Grants from donor-directed funds, including Charitable Accounts, Inc., and Family SM Foundation Plus, are determined on an ongoing basis by the donors. During 2003-2004, The Dayton Foundation awarded 1,840 designated, advised and directed grants from endowments, totaling $10,113,299, to assist a variety of purposes, including the arts, youth programs, the environment, health and human services, education and scholarships. Scholarships During 2003-2004, The Dayton Foundation awarded $1,749,276 from 110 funds to help more than 1,200 students advance their educational goals. Eligibility requirements vary from fund to fund. Legacy Partnership Program of The Dayton Foundation Since The Dayton Foundation established the Legacy Partnership Program in 2002, dozens of Greater Miami Valley notfor-profits have signed up to help build their endowments through this planned and deferred giving program. This first-in-the-nation program helps charities start a legacy program or invigorate a languishing or dormant program to help sustain their organization in the future. The Dayton Foundation’s Legacy Partnership Program: ❧ teaches an approach to endowment building that has a proven track record of securing legacy gifts; ❧ provides a structure and discipline to assure that charities have allocated time to devote to their program; ❧ provides support for endowment-building efforts, with access to the Foundation’s services and Development staff with planned and deferred giving knowledge and experience; and ❧ helps charities grow their resources for the benefit of the community. The program has shown remarkable growth in the last fiscal year – from 14 organizations in February 2003 to 49 organizations participating as of June 30, 2004. These organizations’ funds are included in the Endowed Funds section of this report, on pages 15-59.
