John A. Beckley Memorial
Scholarship Fund – 1995
($12,460) remembers the
late principal of Butler High
School by providing for the
award of a scholarship to
the outstanding graduating
senior of this area school
each year. This fund is the
result of memorial contributions
from community and
family members.
Sylvia and Lawrence
Brazie Family Fund – 1999
($15,834) enhances growth
of nonprofit organizations
designated by the donors,
Sylvia Brazie and her husband
Lawrence, founder and
chairman of Westminster
Financial Companies, Inc.,
and board member emeritus
of the Vandalia-Butler
Foundation.
C. F. Companies Scholarship
Fund – 1993 ($13,387) helps
graduates of Butler High
School further their educational
studies. The fund is
named for the airfreight
company.
Kathy Huston Clemens
Memorial Scholarship
Fund – 2000 ($13,786) was
established by the family
and friends of this Vandalia-
Butler High School graduate,
to award college scholarships
to Vandalia-Butler High
School graduates pursuing a
degree in education. Kathy
Clemens was a beloved
third-grade teacher and the
1998 “Teacher of the Year”
in Houston, Texas.
The Orville M. Cotterman
Grant Fund – 2002 ($6,405)
was established in honor of
Orville M. Cotterman’s 90th
birthday. Mr. Cotterman was
born and raised in Vandalia
Lawrence and Sylvia Brazie
and served 16 years on the
Vandalia School Board.
Grants will support activities
and projects that the
state or local school board
cannot provide.
Kathy Huston Clemens
Connie DeHart Memorial
Scholarship Fund – 1993
($9,867) is in remembrance
of this educator and encourages
young women from
Butler High School to enter
the teaching profession.
Colin and Lori Gatland
Family Fund – 2000
($12,303) recognizes this
family’s love of animals by
funding charitable and educational
activities that benefit
them. Lori Gatland is
a former trustee of The Vandalia-Butler
Foundation.
Mary F. Geiger Scholarship
Fund – 1997 ($2,184),
created by Mary F. Geiger,
sows the seeds of knowledge
by awarding grants and
scholarships to Northridge
High School graduating
seniors to defray education
expenses at accredited colleges
and universities.
Superintendent B.P. Gibson
Memorial Scholarship Fund
– 1999 ($14,167) was established
by the friends and
family of B.P. Gibson, former
superintendent of Vandalia-
Butler High Schools, to award
scholarships to graduating
seniors of the Vandalia-Butler
High School women’s varsity
soccer team.
Stuart S. Gitman Memorial
Scholarship Fund – 1998
($10,804) was created by
Dr. Edith Gitman in memory
of her son. The fund provides
scholarship awards
for graduating Butler High
School seniors who do not
necessarily excel academically
at the time of the award,
but have an interest in furthering
their education.
Colin and Lori Gatland, with their
dogs and their friends’ children
The Mark Goens Art
Scholarship Fund – 1985
($15,637) was established
by Mark Goens’ parents,
Steven F. and Marilyn Goens,
to assist graduates of the
Vandalia-Butler City Schools,
in the graduates’ study of
art. Mark Goens, a skilled
artist and outdoorsman, died
while he was a freshman at
Morton Junior High School.
Mary Louise Gross-Poorman
Scholarship Fund – 2001
($15,639) was established
by this retired teacher, who
taught second grade for 43
years, to award scholarships
to Northridge High School
graduates majoring in elementary
education at Miami
University.
The Historical Society of
Vandalia-Butler Endowment
Fund – 2001 ($21,255)
helps in the preservation
and capital improvement of
historic buildings located in
the Vandalia-Butler area.
Robert Hock Scholarship
Fund – 1994 ($6,906) defrays
educational expenses
for Vandalia-Butler High
School graduates entering
The Ohio State University in
the field of health sciences.
This fund was established
by the Vandalia Rotary Club
in memory of Robert Hock,
owner of Hock’s Pharmacy.
The Horner Family
David A. and Kathryn E.
Horner Family Memorial
Fund – 1997 ($15,369)
provides a scholarship to a
Butler High School graduate.
The focus changes in alternate
years when grants are
made to the Miami County
Career Technical Center and
to Boy Scout Troop #307.
The fund was created by
friends and family from the
Vandalia-Butler community
in memory of David, Kathryn,
Jonathan, Carmen and
Preston Horner, who perished
in a train accident in
central Ohio.
Leo and Marie Lauber
Family Scholarship Fund –
2000 ($15,620) will serve
to remember the Lauber
family’s belief in education
by awarding scholarships to
Vandalia-Butler High School
graduates enrolled in college
or to Vandalia-Butler residents
attending the Miami Valley
Career Technology Center.
Leo Lauber worked at GM/
Frigidaire for 30 years. Marie
Lauber was a homemaker.
Together they called Butler
